I know a guy who runs a reefer (refrigerated trailer) 18 wheeler. He says that numerous times he has picked up a truckload of produce at a farm. He delivers the produce to regular supermarkets and Whole Foods. Same produce from the same fields, labeled organic at Whole Foods and no such labeling at regular supermarkets. Because it's not organic.

Doubtful. Maybe their stuff really isn't organic, but they wouldn't make it so easy and obvious to track the true origins of their produce. If that got out, they'd be bankrupt.

Yep.

I talked to an owner of an old well known place with a great reputation up the river while at lunch a few weeks ago and he admitted that he uses that instead of local catfish. I'm sorry, but it pissed me off to learn this info.

Kudos to this local reporter. Unfortunately most local journalism has fallen by the wayside because they're afraid to piss off potential advertisers.

There ain't going to be anything farm to table in fricking Florida

Yeah, it's not like Florida isn't one of the largest agricultural states in the Union.

Hurts my heart to read this, both for the deception of the general trying-to-do-the-right-thing public, and since the story illuminates how our BHM-to-NOLA local print media* has devolved into low-brow click-bait.

Not all organics are created equal, some most certainly are a sham.

But people who think that consuming meat/milk pumped full of hormones/antibiotics and produce flooded with carcinogen pesticides have no bearing on your health are the true idiots.

The new market that caters to self proclaimed food snobs is lucrative and seedy. I don't blame them for making huge profits off of smug, pretentious people

The consumer should educate themselves. I've read the whole series and heard her interviewed this past week and there is not one thing in the article I didn't already know. I read labels and whatever else as well as ask questions. I also don't get to worked up about it although I think it is bait and switch.

Every produce stand around is a reseller with chain grocery rejects.

It may be, but not in most traditional categories : corn, rice, potatoes cotton, wheat, cattle, hogs. Actually, other than potatoes or cattle, Georgia outranks Florida in each category and is I ninsignifigant compared to the Mid West.

Florida has a different climate than the rest of the 48. They grow specialized stuff which may not be standard farm to table fare.

Good conversation about this in the last few days on the FDB.
LINK

Bottom line, if a restaurant isn't sitting on a farm and the menu isn't constantly changing with the seasons, then any "Farm to Table" claim is absolute bullshite. It's amazing to me how people can tell it's "fresh" because they're told it's FTT while eating "local" fish with Spring Vegetables in January. I've come to the conclusion that people actually want to be lied to because they ignore all sense once they get to a restaurant.

I didn't see that episode but I bet it was on point. When my SO told me about all the new "organic" products at Sam's I knew it was a bullshite corporate money grab

I hate to bring him into this, but I'm pretty sure Obama's administration deregulated the standards for organic labeling. I could be completely wrong but I don't feel like doing any research.

I don't get why people are so anti-GMO anyway.

If you really think about it, virtually every sustainable crop is genetically modified. Some the old fashioned Mendelian way, others with modern tech. I do t see what the big deal is at all.
