I worked at red lobster back in the day and it definitely brought in the crappiest people.

she watched a solo diner take down 30 orders of fried shrimp within four hours. According to the nutritional information on Red Lobster’s website, that’s something like 14,000 calories.
disgusting.

I can only imagine the morbid obesity of these "diners."
Very likely, but you can’t count out the skinny fellers when it comes to something like shrimp or crawfish, especially when not fried.

1) the restaurants which don't want people to eat large quantities of food, shouldn't advertise AYCE/endless food
2) do they really lose THAT much money, considering the vast majority of customers don't eat more than a couple plates?

When I was a kid my mom would tske us to Captain D's, one time they started running a kids eat free deal. We pulled up one day when this was going on and two school buses of kids pulled up with about 4 adults lol. They changed the deal the next week.
Can't underestimate the lengths people will go to for free meals. No doubt, they meant it to be for individual families.
No different than when Denny's did free grand slams. People went in for the free grand slam, ordered water, and left 0% tip (15-20% of free is 0, lol).

True story: I met my wife at Red Lobster.
I was in town for a job interview. She was not on the hiring committee, but was part of the group that was supposed to take me out and show me around during my visit. It was a Friday night during Lent, and most of the group were practicing Catholics. We were supposed to go to one of the fancy seafood places in town, but they didn't have a reservation and it was gonna be a couple of hours wait. So we ended up going to Red Lobster instead. When the person driving me and I came in, there was my future wife waiting for us in the lobby of the Red Lobster.

Durrant said he once spent between three and four hours in the dining room, downing 83 shrimp in total, and took “at least one nap” at the table.
I can't believe everyone passed this one up... This is the gem of the article...

No private equity vultures ruined it

Break even point on a promotion like this is 3-4 plates.
One a-hole eating 15-20 plates offsets a lot of people eating 1-2 plates and they tend to travel in packs.

I'm surprised they just didn't stop serving them even thought it's "eat til you die" ads. They put themselves into a corner by continuing to serve them losing money with every time they bring more. I'll say that customers will find ways to be ridiculous about taking advantage of every little thing. I've seen this in my many years of restaurant ownership.

Now, what can we do to insure the same fate of the disgusting Olive Garden? Endless pasta bowls hasn't worked. We need something else to get rid of that shittiness.

Real estate is their undoing. Not crustaceans.

I never did the endless shrimp. I would be embarrassed to ask for more. It is the same with an all you can eat buffet. I am willing to get healthy portions on the first trip but never go back for more.

You could try not going there, it has worked really well for me, I haven't had their food in decades.

I shed a tear or two the day I found out that one of my favorite local seafood joints stopped offering all you can eat frog legs. They still have them, and they bumped the order size up by a couple legs, but it was just some amount of comfort just knowing that I could eat as many frog legs as I could hold, even if I only ate a couple baskets.
I've gotta go.....I'm headed to the river, I've worked up an appetite for frog legs just typing this.

Oh, I don't. You couldn't pay me to eat at an Olive Garden.

Gross. I try to avoid imported shrimp. I wouldn’t binge eat them if they were free.

I think OG is better than the average chain.

I would put it away in high school and through college. No way I can do it now, and I just prefer to order off the menu if possible. All I can eat is way more than I need and is guaranteed to make me feel miserable later.
