Truman Capote has in fact confirmed the fact the Kennedy men all suffered greatly from the Irish Curse.

Many in this photo were far too young to have voted for JFK.

Yes, that’s a toy gun in that little kid’s hand. Can you imagine this scene ever happening again with a modern-day president? There’s a reason why the kid might have had the gun pointed at his own mouth.

First of all, it’s not just an ordinary toy gun, but it’s a squirt gun. The squirt guns existed before water bottles were commonly marketed, so the kid was drinking some water from his squirt gun, which was actually not unheard of use of squirt guns, because, as stated, there were no water bottles.

Kids were allowed to play with toy guns back in the day. Even at school or at public events. Toy guns were marketed as looking as close to real guns as possible.

JFK was the last honorable democrat.

Anyway, that’s a harmless toy “cap gun” you had to buy these little orange revolver caps to go inside. Made a nice sound when you hit the trigger.

Honorable is a hell of a word to be throwing around post-sedition.

I wish I owned that chair/stool on which he's standing.

I have that exact chair in my shed, going to get it refurbished. I use to sit on it in my grandpas shop when we worked on things... Will update with a pic if interested in seeing (not selling)

Great question. The photograph was taken in West Virginia, that looks like something that you would find in a more rural community. But you have to figure that he was making speeches all day long in different locations and they probably needed something for him to be elevated a bit. Maybe they were carrying it with them...

Could have belonged to a shop owner. Might have thought nothing of loaning it to him, and then taking it and putting it back behind the counter.

I just don't know.

Eta. He seems to be speaking into some kind of microphone. You see the cord go down and looks like it wraps around his back but then where does it go? You can't see it running along the ground anywhere at the foot of the stool...

This kind of stuff fascinates me. I found this comment on this page:

quote:

This was taken in Omar, West Virginia population around 100 people. My brother is the boy with the dark hair staring at the photographer. I remember this well. Someone went into the store behind JFK to get a kitchen stool for him to stand on. I was with my Mom and baby sister off to the left , out of the picture. After speaking and shaking hands he came over to us. I had practiced what I was going to say to him the night before ( I was seven years old). My Mom shook his hand and turned to me and said “say hello to the next President of the United States”. I said “Hello Mr President” and gave him some wild flowers. My two year old sister stuck her hand out with a bunch of dandelions. JFK had two of him men walk us across the road. My brother got his autograph. We moved months afterwards because of a big mining disaster to Chicago. A magical time frozen in our memories.

I guess they brought it back to the store after the speech. I wonder if the storeowner tried to sell it later or thought much of it.

People didn’t freak out about fake guns and pop tarts in the shape of guns in the old days.

Cap pistol. Back before everyone became pussies they looked almost indistinguishable from a real colt 45 revolver at first glance. Part of many an epic cowboys and indians, uhhh, people of indigenous origin, game.

Back in 1970, 5 year old me was always running around wearing my Colt 45 cap guns & gunbelt holster. The lady working the admission booth at the San Antonio Zoo wouldn't let me enter with them though...thought I might scare the animals.

Water gun would be my guess. If it is hot, kids use to suck on water guns. Saw it all the time in the sixties.

Toy gun. Very normal in 1960 for little boys to play with toy guns.
