That's what you get for having it made in Taiwan.

CE's chime in but that seems to be a major flow in cable-stayed bridges. One cable fails and the whole structure falls?

If this country doesnt get it act together and start reinvesting in infrastructure, this will be happening here.

Nobody seems to have learned any lessons from when the I35 bridge collapsed in Minneapolis.

Thankfully, that second video angle makes it looks like he only fell about 15 or 20 feet, and landed on his back bumper (instead of upside down). Looked way more survivable than the first video.

Is he the "burning oil tanker truck" that fell on the boats as described in the summary of the first video? I can't tell from the video of the burning truck if it was escapable or not.

that tanker speeding across it helped cause the failure.

So a fricking bridge can't stand up to a single large truck? That is some damn awful engineering.

sounds like you need to brush up on your reading comprehension. Or did you just omit this

supposedly it was hit by a typhoon 3 days ago.
this could have caused damage and being it was in tawain wasnt inspected like it should have been after the typhoon.

not really. all states have inspection programs and should find critical decencies. Im not saying one cant/wont fail but its not like every bridge will just start falling.

that was actually a design flaw. Something similar was found on the older span on the 190 bridge in Krotz Springs. It was shut down and repaired.

Because infrastructure maintenance isn’t high on the political agenda list and there are tons of bridges around the world that are in dire need of repair but still driven across everyday.

Call Pelosi to get off her arse with this impeachment bull shite. Trump is dying to sign an infrastructure bill. But Pelosi is all caught up with the OMB...doesn't what to give him anything that can be construed as a win even if it helps us.

When I went to Vietnam back in 2012, I noticed that just about any major bridge was built by American or European (mostly French) firms. Each one had a plaque somewhere on the bridge giving credit to the country of origin.

Some of these places simply don't have the expertise/QC to pull off large projects/structures such as this.

At first glance it might seem that way, but a correctly designed bridge would include redundancy in the supporting elements. If one fails, loads get transferred to others that have extra capacity. It isn't an ideal condition and would probably require traffic restrictions to some degree, but it avoids a catastrophic failure.

I was kind of wondering about the ends of the arches. I only looked on my phone, but they didn’t seem like built into the abutment or other supports and almost overhanging. I know for tied arch bridge it may not be may where main thrust is directed, but it didn’t seem right.

Edit: had a chance to look at google maps and they are over some supports. Weight pulled the arch posts off supports first and then fell down which is why at first I didn’t think they were over any kind of support.

I drive across this one once or twice a week. It's only 10 years old but still, if it gives way...it's a LONG way down.
