Tailgating - getting worse?

I notice the last few years, especially in the south, it is fairly normal to ride someone's bumper even when they're doing 10-over in the left lane and a line of cars in front.
Is this cool and I missed the memo?
Edit - do you think this is because more and more people are on their phone scanning facebook or insta and just monitoring the bumper/brakelights in their field of vision?When there isn't full attention paid to the next car, does the gap narrow?

The south has some of the worst drivers. Idiots cannot figure out that most of their woes will be solved with proper merging. Bring on the AI to fix this

I was in Dallas the other day and I don’t think my car would go fast enough to keep me from getting honked at if I even looked at the passing lane.

If I'm driving 8 mph over the speed limit and actively passing people, I'm not making much of an effort to get in the right lane. Be patient I'll move over when I'm done passing.

Yep, and it directly leads to the tailgating. Both likely contributed to the massive wreck in Alabama last week.

Its either tailgate the person in front of you or have some asshat claim your safety cushion as their space and cut right in front of you.

On that note, there is no greater joy than seeing a group of cars that work together and keep that one idiot, who comes flying up in the right lane, stuck behind a big rig. Bonus points if said idiot gets further railroaded and actually loses spots.
