Taekwondo IMO for someone his age. I took Taekwondo when I was a kid and it was fun. The classes I took were run by the USTA.

I had my boys in Taekwando when they were young, the place we went was a bit of a pyramid scheme. You had to pay extra to upgrade to a different belt and buy all sorts of equipment they hardly used.

They wrestle now which is a great sport and all they need is a pair of shoes and head gear.

Boxing & Wrestling first. If he likes those, move into BJJ and Muay Thai

This is such a myth. Someone that trains seriously in any martial art is going to destroy someone of similar size who has no training. If you’re talking about matching one martial art against another, then there are arguments to be made.

The problem with Taekwondo is that there are so many McDojos around that are just belt mills, so the people with belts that didn’t earn them give Taekwondo a bad reputation.

For a 6 year old, go with Taekwondo. It’s a great sport for kids. Pick an organization that also does weapons training also (chuks, staff, kamas, sword, etc.), which will open the door to sport karate (creative and extreme martial arts) - that’s where the real fun starts. If your kid really gets into it, he or she will want to compete, so make sure you choose an organization with access to multiple tournaments in your area.

Depends on the school. My son took BJJ at a place that was awesome for kids. Wasn't too intense. Let them have fun while learning basics. We moved to the other side of town and it was just too far of a drive at the time they held the kids class. We went somewhere closer and they although they took kids that young, they were treating it like and adults class and had too large of an age range working together. It just didn't work for us. Now that my son is a few years older, we need to look back into it.

. Between Taekwondo and Jiu Jitsu

My kid takes Taekwondo and has done well at it...
They introduce self defense as a separate class because Taekwondo is such an aggressive hard/hard martial art that blocks sparing shots... and that's about it for defending yourself.

Anyway my kids hands are fast as frick now, but he still ain't whipping me until he can stop a double-leg.

BJJ.

Helped me be a great wrestler in HS. It’s an invaluable martial art for real self defense

Wrestling would be the better option to start with and learn all of the fundamentals and toughness. Several years of learning wrestling and then transitioning into Jiu Jitsu going forward afterwards is what almost all of the best UFC fighters will tell you.

Just for fun and a little exercise and learning discipline, taekwondo is fine.

But for actual usefulness in a fight and more exercise, jiujitsu is way better out of those two. Also look at boxing, kravmaga, Muay Thai, or just good old fashioned wrestling.
