How does a Subway survive on $1,000 day in sales? Labor costs alone would take up over 1/2 of that.

The ones I've been in typically only have 2, maybe 3, employees in them at a time. Since they're not really cooking anything, equipment costs would be pretty low. They also tend to not take up a lot of physical space, so rent should be pretty low - they tend to be jammed into strip malls or convenience stores.

A friend of mine use to do the landscape work for several taco bells around Baton Rouge. He would be there when deliveries came in and would have to go in the building through the back, etc. He said they would have these huge cans of meat (cans.. as in canned food) and there was a label that said "grade D but edible". This was 10-15 years ago so I don't know if anything has changed.. But I don't understand the love for taco bell.

Yeah, I don't consider Starbucks #1 in anything but coffee chains. They sell some food but the amount of people who go there to get food wouldn't put them anywhere near the top 10.
And people can hate on Taco Bell all they want but that is some good tasting fast food and you can go on a strict budget if you want. Plus their menu is constantly changing so it never gets old. I don't get upset stomach from it any more than when I eat Tex-mex from the local Mexican restaurant even when I cook my own at home. My stomach is sensitive to chili powder so I just deal with it but that isn't Taco Bell's fault.
