Is that a big deal?
A very big deal for many! I've been caught quite a few times on the phone and had to quickly fetch some type of info or data. And simultaneously talk/browsing is great during waiting periods such as airports, apointments and such.

I had unlimited with AT&T and they just kept slowing down my speed to prevent me from using it. Switched to a fixed data plan for cheaper and have never gone over it. Unlimited data isn't holding me back.

AT&T will lose a ton of business over this clusterfrick
Meh. They'll lose some, but it won't be as much as you think. They'll give some credits to those pissed enough to call and that'll satisfy most enough to stay. I don't blame people for leaving, but the hassle will prevent a mass exodus.

Anyone know the technical reasons why AT&T are having so many problems with both their mobile and land lines?

The landlines in my parent's hood in Metairie got screwed up by all of the water from Katrina, and intermittently worked until they replaced everything. They were all underground.
No idea why they didn't cover the area with mobile towers though

They left my company without landlines for nearly an entire week earlier this year. You know what they offered? A six day credit. For failing to provide service to a business account. Know what else they did? They sent our account to collections exactly 1 day after our account was delinquent (we refused to pay for such horrid service). All because they had not upgraded the equipment that serviced our area for over 20 years (info gleaned from their on-site techs).
AT&T doesn't give two shits about their equipment or their existing customers. Their only concerns are acquiring new customers and appeasing enough existing customers with problems so that it doesn't hurt their bottom line too much. You are expendable. Do yourself a favor and switch to something, anything else.

I would say this is accurate for AT&T.

Lately I've been traveling a road in Ms for work that Att has service on. When I first started traveling the route I noticed what looks like cat5 cable that ran alongside the road for a couple hundred yards. A week later there was another cat5 cable run along side of the first. Now over these three months there are a total of 5 white cat5 cables. It appears that there is a bad section of main line with difficult access so att is jumpering it around with the cat5. And I guess everytime a squirrel chews through the last good cable they run another one.

I have about another 6 weeks of this route so I'm curious as to how many cables will be strewn about by then.

I was with ATT for one contract, never, never, again. Verizon is substantially cheaper and I'm never out of service.
ATT for suckers.

Just got back from camping near Cuchara,Co. and had service with Verizon, while my kids who are on AT&T had nothing for a week.
