However, on a per-capita basis, Sweden far outpaces its Scandinavian neighbors in COVID deaths, with 567 deaths per million people compared with Denmark's 106 deaths per million, Finland's 59 deaths per million, and Norway's 47 deaths per million. The Swedish figure is closer to Italy's 581 deaths per million.

While the positive trends have led Anders Tegnell, PhD, chief epidemiologist at the Swedish Public Health Agency and architect of Sweden's coronavirus strategy, to state that the "Swedish strategy is working," others have criticized the approach, including two dozen Swedish academics who published a recent USA Today editorial.

"In Sweden, the strategy has led to death, grief, and suffering," they wrote. "On top of that, there are no indications that the Swedish economy has fared better than in many other countries. At the moment, we have set an example for the rest of the world on how not to deal with a deadly infectious disease."

And the lockdown strategy in UK, Spain, Italy, and Belgium led to even more death than Sweden.

They’ll have to fight liberals to the death for rights to make that claim about respective countries.

Why does your post have so many downvotes?

It’s a single fact paired with a direct quote

Is this true?

I would love to know what countries have used this and if it was successful.

Look at Uruguay. Population 45 million. COVID cases 1300. COVID deaths 37. Use HCQ to treat malaria and I think you can get it over the counter.
Why won't the US allow us to buy it over the counter?

I wasn't aware it's over yet.

Some would argue Denmark, Finland and Norway will have their numbers increase as they ease lock downs.

I don't think anyone can celebrate at this point. We shall see.

wait so we do want to model our governmental policies after Sweden or not? I swear the OT told me that we shouldn’t because of our size and diversity

2 things:

1. Sweden still banned large gathering, visiting nursing homes and told people to socially distance. Scandinavian culturally are very socially conscience. If we were like them I’d be fine with a Sweden approach.

2. They still did significantly worse than their neighbors. Who are Still doing significantly better than Sweden by a large margin.

That’s taking into account population, population density, test per capita. Any way you cut it Norway and Finland did better as far as less people getting this and less people dying from it.

I’m always amazed at the people that let Trump skate on the Corona response instead focusing on the shitshow governors. Trump enables the governors to do what they did.

Yeah, I’d say lockdowns worked better but don’t let facts get in the way of your opinion

And now Sweden is theoretically done. The others are just stretching out the results by delaying the inevitable. Let's compare the numbers again in a year. If the other countries "catch up" to Sweden in deaths, but Sweden's economy is booming and doesn't have mass unemployment, homeless, and other countless consequences, I'd say Sweden won in the long term.

The biggest issue in this debate has always been short-sightedness. Yes, lockdowns might look the numbers look better now and "prove" the pro-lockdown folks right, for now. But it doesn't solve anything. It just swept the problem under the rug. And now we get to deal with sweeping economic destruction for the next couple decades on top of it.
