This time of year, you could hear the waves hitting from 10-15 miles away. The white foam surf was 15-20 feet high. Unreal.

I do surf. Leashes keep your board with you after a Wipeout.

However in big waves most people forgo leashes because it just drags you around in the washing machine

Correct. Though not for certain, the theory is big-wave surfer Mark Foo got tangled in his leash when he was killed at Maverick's about 20 years ago.

Getting put through the washing machine sucks

One time I was under the water for 30 seconds or so as two big 10'ers crested on top of me out of nowhere. As long as you're a strong swimmer and can hold your breath for a minute or more you're golden
