Supreme Court upholding what america was built on. The American dream doesn’t mean you get free shite

The smart ones have been saving that deferred money in a separate account, ready to throw it all at the loans upon restart
People are horrible money managers though. Rather than chop away at their loan balance all these years with zero interest, I'm sure many stop making payments altogether waiting for the government to bail them out.

Consumption lifestyle impacts all of us; usually negatively. That's not exclusive to colleges and higher ed, but it's a damn big part of it for some people.
We have to fight this aversion to going to a state college, community college, or trade school to save a small fortune on your education....and the lack of emphasis on choosing a field of study that maximizes your potential future income.
Frankly some state universities need to increase capacity without increasing costs to students. Because there will be more kids trying to go there instead of these fallback private liberal arts colleges with sky high tuition and dubious degree value. And yeah, the value of that degree is tangible. There is a limit to what people that seek to be self sustaining adults should spend in their quest to obtain it.

Classic right wing frick the common man response. Forgiving student loans allows all those people to spend more money pumping it back into the economy. If you’re actually worried about your money helping out people I can assure you your tax money goes to far worse stuff than this
you’re soo pathetic

I'd be okay with loan repayment programs with strings. Like join the peace corps or the armed forces. Or work in an area that's underserved for your particular line of work for an extended period of time.
But most people that are completely and hopelessly buried in loans are the ones that have chosen a useless field of study at a very expensive university. They can't be teachers, nurses, dentists, engineers, etc. And Starbucks can't hire all of them.

You aren’t wrong.
It does suck for kids who live in shithole states like Louisiana, though.

Like you need to work and live in an underserved area for whatever service you provide for X number of years, and during that time you have to make all of your student loan payments on time.
They have this for teachers already.

Relieving the failures of the present by borrowing against the opportunities of the future is about the most immoral political position one can take.

Good.
The problem is that there are people with almost no marketable skills that hold degrees from expensive colleges.
They won't provide any more value in Bogalusa than they do in their posh neighborhood in a major metro. So there's no reason to help them.

The Act allows the U.S. Secretary of Education to grant waivers or relief to recipients of student financial aid programs under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, in connection with a war or other military operation or national emergency. It allows waiving of statutory or regulatory requirements related to federal student loans for three categories of individuals: active-duty military or National Guard officials, those who reside or are employed in a declared disaster area, or those who have suffered direct economic hardship as a result of wars, military operations, or national emergencies.
A pause on payments without interest accruing would make sure those people in qualifying categories were no worse off. Forgiving debt goes beyond the status quo. Biden also extended national emergency for political purposes and to push this forgiveness (even though he slipped up in 60 minutes interview and said it was over before Democrats planned it to be over).
The other issue was blanket forgiveness without regard to actual direct economic hardship by COVID national emergency real or falsely extended.
But most Democrats do believe that student debt in general is a type of disaster deserving of forgiveness. At the same time they don’t want to end the Aid program.

I agree. I'm not against a program where people can sign up to volunteer or do service work to shave off some of their loans. Services that are desperately needed though- litter abatement, tutoring, fostering, etc.

Interesting. This is borrowed from someone in another thread but let's see Nancy Pelosi's viewpoint about this a couple years ago...........
