As someone that is a small-time local ticket reseller, this story caught my attention. I love watching short-sellers get burned. Much like the Auburn-Oregon title game in 2011. Both games in Glendale, AZ. Hmmm.

quote:

In order to "short" the market, a broker typically lists tickets in a generic section of the stadium and doesn't disclose exactly where the seats are until the Wednesday before the game, when sites such as StubHub and Vivid Seats require the brokers to choose exact seat locations or cancel the sale.

The idea for the brokers is to take money from ticket buyers when the tickets are at a higher price after the conference title games, then actually buy the tickets days later as the prices start to come down. The ease of the scheme caused more and more brokers to get in the game.

"Everyone in the business had seen that shorting had been the right move," said a broker who requested anonymity because his company is still short tickets. "For the last five years it had been that way. Everyone was sort of sketched out by Packers. That the ticket could cost a lot of money closer to the game. So the Seahawks win and everyone is undercutting each other just to be able to offer the lowest-price ticket available."

The confidence in the early market was buoyed by the fact Patriots fans haven't established themselves as the best travelers in recent Super Bowl games, probably because of the frequency with which the team has played in the game over the past decade and a half. But Seattle fans, who turned out in fewer numbers than expected in New York last year, ended up being an enormous draw this year.

Over the past weekend, the supply on ticket sites suddenly dwindled.

"A consolidation of supply this year has led to a handful of sellers being able to manipulate the market and make it nearly impossible for last-minute fans to go to the game," StubHub spokesman Glenn Lehrman said.

So on Sunday, brokers who still hadn't purchased their tickets, started buying tickets at more than $5,000 apiece, losing as much as $3,000 a seat just to save the integrity of their businesses, according to those on the buying and selling side, who spoke anonymously.

Was there ever a time when events like the Super Bowl could be attended by common people?

Yes. I'm pretty sure that prices were still somewhat affordable--but still rather expensive until the rise of Joe Montana and the 49ers.

I think they were probably about a week's average pay rather than two or three months' average pay (not OT baller pay).

Over the last several years, get-in prices would drop under $2000 a ticket as game day approached. Still an obscene amount. Short sellers were counting on this happening again this year and are getting toasted.

If the cheapest seats are barely under $10k I'm pretty sure a bunch of these scalpers are gonna end up getting burned which is fine by me.

I went to Super Bowl 31 and 32 and even back then the prices weren't as far out of reach as they are now.

It was a great experience (31 mainly as a Packers fan, 32 not so much) but with the game coverage so good on TV I have a hard time believing many would value that experience that much.

A few years ago, my dad just dropped "I went to Super Bowl 6. We decided to go check it out on a whim. Cowboys beat the Dolphins. It was cold."

I was like, well that's neat as shite.

I'm amazed that ticket scalpers are terrible with money.

I like football as much as the next guy, but I can't imagine myself shelling out 4 figures to sit in a stadium and watch a 3-4 hour game. Maybe I'm just not that big of a fan.

i wonder actually how many people would like to go and how many tickets are spoken for...

also what the lowest price would be if it was a true open market for tickets...

I don't really see them dropping much either because the weather has been shite and is supposed to be shite on Saturday as well so people will have extra money to spend since they haven't been out blowing it.

My dad went to Super Bowl 4 in Tulane Stadium. He says he think they left early cause the game was pretty boring.

I guess I'll have to be a millionaire to ever attend one of these games. $7500? Wow.

Yep, I had tickets through my dad's company for AU-Oregon, otherwise we would have seriously considered selling them when prices were ridiculous. I don't think I would have sold mine, but I might have sold the GFs and given her 1000 bucks to go shop or something.

That Auburn Oregon ticket craze was nuts. The week before the game, Stubhub was offering anyone that bought their tickets on Stubhub, 2.5x what they paid for them so they could fill unfilled orders.

Cheapest Stubhub Get-in up over $10000 now.
