Pretty good podcast that addresses the geographical limitations of the region which are exacerbated by the relatively low natural resources.

If you're interested in this stuff, Germs, Guns, and Steel is a pretty good book on it. It looks like there might be a documentary about with that title as well now.

What made the desert stop where it does? Is there a river or something?

it has to do with how the air circulates globally. deserts are usually in the mid-latitudes where the air is dry because it dumped all its precipitation in the equatorial regions, where you tend to find rainforests.

other deserts can be created by being on the leeward side of mountain ranges. same idea, smaller scale.

This Youtube video goes into detail over it

Water is a big issue. Lack of ports, navigable rivers, and spread of drinking water.

Africa has more coastline usable year round than any other continent, yet no sub-Saharan civilization made a boat that could go more than 100 yards offshore. So, yeah, not impressive.

And almost no rivers (especially navigable ones) leading to those coasts

Since river craft and ocean-going craft are completely different animals, other than you trying to display your pseudo-intellect for all the world to see, what exactly is your point?

Sub-Saharan African Civilizations

Maybe their civilizations weren’t impressive because they lived in a food desert

Without rivers, there wont' be trade networks within Africa.

Without trade networks, why would the coasts develop anywhere? Any goods from outside Africa could not be transported within the continent very well, and there would be nothing coming from the continent to exchange for these imports.

There is speculation the Songhai sailed to South America before the Europeans.

regardless, your 100 yards offshore comment is way off base.

Mansa Abu Bakr II (Malian, Songhai predecessor) made a fleet of 2,000 ships to sail across the Atlantic in 1311

Not a podcast but Prisoners of Geography goes into great detail why resource rich Subsaharan Africa didn’t develop like the northern portion of the continent

And exactly 1 natural deep water port that was large enough for cargo vessels back in the 1500’s. Everything else is extensively man made.

Compare that to the rocky coasts of the US where it seems like every town is built on a natural deep water port.

That the cheapest and most efficient way to move goods and people is over water. Over land takes incredibly long and is significantly less efficient than barges or cargo ships.

Not having navigable rovers leads to pockets of isolated communities, preventing the coalescing of peoples, distribution of labor, and the scale achievable through these two occurrences.

The first thing man did when he could stand upright is figure out a way to get the hell out of Africa.

There’s a lot of interesting theories out there on the evolution of humans and race. If you believe in God and angels and such you can really get down a rabbit hole
