That was certainly why many of the individuals were fighting. But that has absolutely nothing to do with what the war was waged over. The "poor fricks" you described didn't start the war or wage the war. They were pawns. The war was about slavery
If the north claims moral high ground, then
Why did the emanc. Proc. only free slaves in the south - enemy territory - and not the north?
Why was the largest slave trading center in the US in Washington DC, right under the president's nose?
Why was slavery ended everywhere else in the west without a bloody civil war?
Not to mention Sherman basically raped and pillaged, in the literal sense, his way across the south and grant was an alcoholic a-hole. Waging civilian warfare against women and children doesn't say much for a humanitarian effort.
Lincoln was a crony railroad lobbyist who destroyed opposition newspapers, jailed Supreme Court justices, and single handendly destroyed the republic and morphed it into a centralized state of tyranny from which it never recovered.
Thankfully slavery did end, but it happened everywhere else without a massive bloody war to "unite" the nation.

7th grade English. If anyone said they were "done" with their work, she'd reply with "Food is done, people are finished." But she was also an idiot from BFE Sterlington.

You know what pct of southerners owned slaves? 4. 4 fricking pct.
And that same small group controlled enough of the economic and political power to cause the confederate states to secede and start the civil war.
quote:
You know who made up almost all of the men who died for the Confederacy? The 96%. The poor fricks who did the same shite the slaves did every day for their family farms. You think these dudes were going to go die in their own shite for the rich dudes down the street to stay rich? frick no. They probably hated those guys.
The bottom 96% will do any god-damned thing the top 4% tell them to. Right now, the top 4%, hell, even the top 1%, are telling the bottom 99% to get their asses out of bed, get to work and put in 50, 60 or more hours every week to make barely enough to live on, and the 99% are doing just that. Do the 99% hate them? A good many of them sure as hell do. Does that make one lick of difference when it comes to what the 1% can "make" the 99% do? Nope. And even dying in wars is no different. The thousands of American soldiers who have died in Iraq protecting oil interests aren't the sons and daughters of billionaires. You think they wanted to die so Exxon and other corporations could keep raking in billions? Hell no. And it didn't matter one bit.
quote:
It probably had more to do with waking up and looking out your window to see a bunch of dudes who arent from your home marching across your land. There is a reason the south called it the war of northern aggression.
Federal troops weren't marching across the south (or at least not in significant numbers) until after secession and after Fort Sumter.
quote:
Maybe you think you know what the generals and politicians were after...but you are way off when it comes to the intentions of the soldiers.
What the hell do the intentions of the soldiers matter? They didn't matter in Vietnam, they don't matter in Iraq and Afghanistan and they won't matter in whatever next bullshite war we get into for reasons that have little or nothing to do with protecting our freedom. Soldiers didn't start the civil war. Greedy rich people and their political puppets did for one simple reason, the same reason they started almost all wars that have ever been fought: to protect their economic interests. Their economic interests depended on slavery, so slavery had to be protected at any cost, even civil war. If you think they would have gone to that extent to protect states' rights on issues like bank regulation (McCulloch vs. Maryland), steamboat traffic (Gibbons vs. Ogden), etc., then you are deluding yourself. It was slavery, and the desperate need of wealthy slaveowners in the south to keep it, that was pretty much the sole cause of the civil war.

Yes... which was the point of my underlining and bolding... and then the comment where I said "So much fail..."

I assume you're talking about the slave market at Old Town Alexandria. If so, wasn't that a huge issue that got resolved before the civil war by retroceding that part of the District of Columbia back to Virginia while the rest of D.C. abolished slavery within the district? At least that's how the story goes here when you ask why part of the original District of Columbia is now owned by Virginia.

Elementary school teacher told me turkeys couldn't fly. Got aggravated when I tried to explain that they could. I was already hunting with my dad by that age and had seen them fly many times

Because none of those other places seceded from the union, declared themselves an independent country, assembled a military force and attacked a U.S. Army installation?

Teacher walked in one day and started writing on the board. She was crazy FWIW. There are 4 people in the entire class
"Put it out." She says.
"What," we say?
"The cigarette. I won't turn around to see who has the audacity to smoke in my class, just put it out."
"No one is..."
"Don't lie to me."
Went on like this for like 3 minutes

In 2006 I had a professor that stated in the syllabus that we were REQUIRED to join the class Facebook group for "easier communication." I nipped that in the bud by going to the department head and complaining. He had to correct it on the syllabus and announce that it's optional. Frick Facebook!

What a fricking moron. Nothing worse than "history" teachers spouting off nonsense that's backed by nothing more than overwhelming primary source documentation and nearly all the top scholars in the field.
Only thing worse are the moronic science teachers that believe in evolution and climate change am I right?
