Could be a placebo effect or something else. Doesnt mean that the chemicals within the drug are solely responsible for changing the situation.

It didn’t start with V. It really took off with IV. There are some great books on the topic.
What “is or isn’t” a medical condition is also impacted heavily by political pressure.
This topic is heavily contentious, but transgenderism is a perfect example. It is one of the only, if not the only, instance in psychiatry where the proposed treatment of a delusion is deemed to be feeding the delusion itself. It is at odds to the rest of psychiatry.
If there was a movement to have all doctors no longer classify lung cancer as a disease process, the entire world would laugh.
Now, Scruffy expects to get a bunch of angry responses and downvoted to this post, but it is a truth that people avoid.
The counter argument is usually that homosexuality was once deemed to be a mental disorder, classifying it as a mental disorder was wrong. There is a difference between the two states though.

I just can't agree with people who claim psychiatry is all made up. Ever met a schizophrenic? Meet one and tell me it's bullshite. Or meet a family who lost a loved one to suicide and tell me it's bullshite.

The DSM aids in diagnosis. The doctor's job is to find an appropriate treatment that works for that individual patient.
Exactly. Medicine is an intersection of science in a lab under and people in an uncontrolled world. It isn't algorithmic. If it were, you wouldn't need physicians. Physicians exist to apply their best understanding of the data with their own unique experiences to the patient. They don't exist to check off boxes from a guideline.

I don't believe anything is credible coming from the UK medical community.
These are the med pros who scientifically advise: withdraw treatment, let them die.
The same med pros who determine "negative" words are physically harmful. That "negative" thoughts are also harmful to others. They constantly re-evaluate the definition of "negative" while doing so.
For the highest evaluation of their esteemed UK med system...check out their teeth!

There is pretty strong evidence that some drugs have a massive effect on suicidality. Lithium is one. It has been shown to decrease suicidal behavior in numerous clinical (placebo controlled) trials. The problem with Lithium, though, is it has a lot of side-effects especially when it comes to the kidneys.

Anyone of the TX posters know of a place in Houston for mental health that is supposed to be top notch? I'm in Tennessee, and one of my friends is leaving today for an initial period of 3 weeks somewhere in Houston. He has had a rough 3-4 years and has not been able to find the right combination of doctors, meds, etc. here in Memphis. I'm hoping for him and his family's sake that this place is legit

There are plenty of examples of individuals for whom a diagnosis/prescription didn’t help.

It is a sham occupation, and things like Freudian psychology have been debunked for years.
And people want to give governmental authority to these people. That's scary.

The DSM 5 is complete crap. It was written to be politically correct. I blurred lines between diagnoses and as the article says, it doesn’t provide guidelines for treatment.
The DSM 4 was very useful and easy to understand with the axes 1 and 2 where you have personally disorders and behavioral disorders. It made it very clear as to who needs meds and who needs a therapist.

Are mental health professionals legally obligated to use DSM-V, or could they continue to use DSM-IV if they chose? Forgive me if this seems to be a stupid question.

It's gotten criticism from the left as well. Apparently some of the shrinks on the taskforce believe trannies are mentally ill and that children who claim to have gender issues should be encouraged to act according to their biological sex. This caused the left to send a barrage of letters to the DSM demanding they be fired.
I am not sure why they got rid of the Axis system, though.

Fake science is as bad as fake news.

And most people have to tinker with dosages, different drugs, and combinations before they find the perfect recipe. Then they will still most likely need to make adjustments over time.
There isn’t a magic pill for every ailment.

Be very careful trying to find the right combo of drugs that work. It can take you down a rat hole and make things far worse instead of better.
Not so sure I agree with the try this and see what happens approach that many Drs. use.
