Viral RNA of SARS-COV-2 (the scientific name for the 2020 coronavirus) was found in sewage samples from Milan and Turin as far back as December 18, 2019.

Were these wastewater samples collected for other purposes back in December, and now they are analyzing them for COVID? Just curious how they knew which water samples were from what period

I'm pretty sure that's the case as the study says they had samples tested dating all the way back to September 2018.

I can't speak for Italy, but here there is a chain of custody form that travels with every wastewater sample (for compliance monitoring). It includes the time and date of the sample, who handled it, and when they released the sample to the next user.
