This. I think we were taught in Western Civ or some other class that Carthaginians were Phoenician in origin.

Instead, their DNA profile puts them closer to Sicilian/Aegean (Greek) in genetic make-up by the time of the Punic Wars between Ancient Rome and the Phoenicians. In short, Hannibal probably didn't look like Denzel Washington.
No shite?! This isn’t fricking news. There have never been blacks living in North Africa and the Arabs weren’t there before the Arab invasion of the Islamic conquests in the 7/800s. Obviously Carthage was a Phoenician city due to old archeological evidence and writings from the Roman’s describing them. They were a type of Greek people which is what most of the med. was before they all became Arabized.

Most of the people in North Africa who self-describe as “Arab” are either genetically Berber or Egyptian. Arab culture is built on a combination of trade and conquest , so if the conquered adapt Arabic and Islam, then they’re considered Arabs, no matter the race. Indian Ocean Muslims aren't considered Arab because they never adopted the language.

Black and white weren't even really considered in the ancient world.

I don't agree with you much, but this is absolute fact.
