BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -- A stray bullet struck and killed an English astrophysicist while he was inside an Atlanta-area apartment, authorities say.

Matthew Willson, 31, of Chertsey, Surrey, England, was visiting his girlfriend in the United States when he was hit by a bullet that pierced the wall of the apartment. The shooting happened early Sunday morning, only three days into his visit.

Shepard, whose apartment is in the Atlanta suburb of Brookhaven, who told the television station that the couple woke up on Jan. 16 to the sound of more than 30 gunshots coming from an apartment complex directly behind Shepard’s. A bullet traveled through Shepard’s wall, hitting Willson, she said.

“I held him for another 20 minutes while we waited for the ambulance,” she said. “And while we were waiting, there were more gunshots fired.”

“Matthew Willson was a former PhD student at the University of Exeter and much-loved member of our astrophysics team," a university spokesman said in a statement.

No arrests have been announced.

Those guns did this. Jumping up and firing themselves and they should be held accountable. Make no mistake, we will come after these damn guns firing themselves. Alec Baldwin will lead the investigation.

One astrophysicist shot by another astrophysicist. The irony.

He was probably on his way to drug dealing school when he was shot.

He was sitting in a well-kept apartment complex and a bullet from a crappy 70s-construction complex just happened to get him. It's not a particularly bad area and some people decided to act like idiots. No one was trying to rob or kill anyone.

Not sure what to think about it, other than that we need to stop glorifying casually messing around with firearms. There's a guy who calls himself "Young Gunna" selling millions of downloads and winning awards on TV, FFS.

When I told my mom we were leaving largely because of the crime present in Louisiana she scoffed and told me that crime happened everywhere.

She is right. I can certainly be the product of somebody having a bad day going on a rampage up here in Idaho. Someone could even be having a gun fight and I get hit with a stray bullet.

But it is a lot less likely in some areas than others, Atlanta being a prime example.

EDIT -- Authorities say reckless discharge. I still stand by my point.

Well, that’s certainly going to hurt the tourism industry.

You don’t want to get into what has come out of your Mom’s mouth here (or into it, for that matter).

She’s not an actuarial to be sure.

Using her “logic” go ahead and move to the Presidents streets in BR.

She selfishly wants you to stay around her here in this shithole.

Not sure how we lured him from the siren song of The Woodlands. Maybe he hadn't heard about the 2-for-1 Appletinis.

Atlanta proper is a shithole.

They fricked the rest of Georgia when they didn’t build the northern arc or allow for the second airport. Sadly this was mostly greedy Republicans. They will regret this forever.

It doomed this city forever. Only the worst will stay inside as people with a choice continue to flee (and bring the burba under democrat control..see Cobb and Gwinnett).

The nicest commercial developments inside the perimeter are simply dangerous now.

Cities I will never go to again: NYC, NOLA, Chicago, Los Angeles, and ATL.

Completely senseless and a tragedy. 30+ fricking shots? Is it like these cities have turned into Vietnam?

Was thinking the same thing. Brookhaven is really nice for the most part.
