Grand Isle in 'Bad, Dire Shape'

Video St Bernard parish

Deteriorating Conditions in St Bernard Parish as Ida's Rain Floods Roads

Scooter Resweber, the police chief in Grand Isle, Louisiana, described the disastrous scene there at about 11 a.m. CDT.

"We're watching the roofs peel off buildings next to us. The flooding is catastrophic," Resweber told The Weather Channel. "We're in bad, dire shape."

He and other personnel were riding out the storm in a hardened police bunker with a bulleproof window.

Ida officially made landfall at 11:55 a.m. CDT near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, about 18 miles southwest of Grand Isle and about 60 miles south of New Orleans. Maximum sustained winds were 150 mph, making Ida a high-end Category 4.

A rare extreme wind warning was issued ahead of the storm for those first up in Ida's path. The National Weather Service warned: "This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation!"

Resweber said a wind gauge at the police station measured 148 mph. And then the gauge broke.

"Things are coming apart all around us," he said.

Next update should be around 4pm.
I know they do intermediate updates of the speed and such but I thought they also would update the projected path every 3 hours once it was close.

Also since no plane flights to give us strength updates how do we know when it's dropped to a Cat 3 or 2?

Ground truth via anemometers and pressure gauges will take precedent in determining strength.
