Isn't their main attraction hurricanes?
It's over open water, with no landfall eminent, and nowhere near the US, so...

It looks like the eye definition is really diminishing. Hopefully this things continues to weaken. Anxious to see what the current recon says

Likely an eyewall replacement. We've already seen that it got a little weaker, but it could re-intensify after the eye wipes the crap out of it this morning - like the rest of us.

Do I need to cancel my cruise to the Bahamas for the 14th?
Posted on 10/1/16 at 8:02 am to Uncle JackD
And it's still small in size for a hurricane of this intensity

Canceled my cruise to Kingston and re-booked in Punta Cana.
Just got home from Punta Cana last night. Crazy how this storm was barely a hurricane and then 24 hours later it's a CAT 5.

Well, I certainly hope and pray the UKM2 prediction is as wrong as it appears to be. If it maintained cat 5 strength it would make what Hugo did to us look like child's play.

I remember Hugo. That was one bad dude. It often gets overlooked, especially for Gulf states interests, but that storm wrecked half of SC from Charleston to Myrtle Beach

The 00z Euro is interesting. Keeps it well East of mainland
One thing to watch is the little area that the NHC has highlighted off to the east.

00z Euro develops that a little and that causes a weakness that lets Matthew start to turn to the NE:

00z GFS doesn't develop that feature

So that is something to watch over the 24 - 48hrs. The Euro has been a bit spin up happy this season, so maybe a phantom low on the Euro?

It makes no sense that Jamaicans are doing this and not evacing the Island

I was always told-- that it was very rare fo Guantanamo Bay, Cuba Naval Base to take a direct hit because of the mountains towards Havana.
It looks like the mountains of Cuba will knock Matthew to a CAT2. I don't know if this is newer info or not.

How would they do that? We couldn't evacuate the Gulf Coast with Katrina approaching and it's not an island.

ferries to adjacent areas, boats. huge cargo planes out.
for a cat 4 or 5 you would just think...
People in NOLA gulf coast thought nothing of staying for a Cat3. Along the coast where I am at the rule of thumb is most stay unless it is a strong Cat3.
Cat 4 or 5 I would get the heck out if I had time.

Jamaica has a population of nearly 3 million. You couldn't evacuate that many people in a month, much less a week.
