Stolen tax refund check - WWOTD?

My wife & I received our tax refund check on Tuesday of last week. I placed it in the unpaid bills section of our mail caddy with the intent to sign and deposit on Friday - we both have to sign since we file jointly.

On Friday I had an HVAC company come to install a mini split system in an expansion we’re finishing up. I remember seeing the check Friday morning while standing in the kitchen talking to the guys. (There were actually 2 teams. 1 was doing the mini split install and the other was servicing our central unit.)

I remember seeing the check again at around noon when the central servicing crew was finishing up. I had to move it to get to my checkbook to pay for that service.

The mini split crew finished up at around 2:00 and I paid for that service while on a work call via bank debit from my desk.

When I came downstairs at 4:00 to sign and take the check for deposit, it was gone.

We did a search of the house and didn’t find it. Then I went through the trash and looked in any place it could have fallen. We’ve now been searching for 7 days, and there’s just nowhere else it could be. The only plausible explanation is that one of the HVAC guys took it.

I’ve already started the process of getting a new check from the IRS, but I feel like I should speak with the owner of the local HVAC company.

I guess there’s nothing he can do, but I think it’s something I’d want to know about if I were in his shoes.

Should I speak with him, or just let it go?
