Sultana was a Mississippi River side-wheel steamboat. On April 27, 1865, the boat exploded in the worst maritime disaster in United States history. She was designed with a capacity of only 376 passengers, but she was carrying 2,137 when three of the boat's four boilers exploded and she burned to the waterline and sank near Memphis, Tennessee, killing 1,168 passengers.

Yep that is obviously where they emptied the chamber pots. It works well if the boat is going forward but it would suck if someone emptied the chamber pot while the boat was in reverse.

Hard to imagine that even towns like Cottonport were serviced by steamboats. The bayou running through there now is little more than a ditch.

I was doing genealogical research and recently found my 4th Great Uncle was a River Boat Captain and ran a steamboat line for many years. One of his sons, who was 2nd Clerk on the steamboat Corona, died when the boilers blew up near Port Hudson in 1889. Killed over 40 people.
It had undergone a pretty recent complete overhaul, so who knows what happened.
