An ethnostate with social welfare and above average infrastructure, something a certain party doesn’t support…Take away all the nice stuff and you don’t get a Japan or Poland.

What would you expect? With the threat of Godzilla showing up unannounced and roaming the streets, anybody would be on their best behavior.

Have fun.

Agreed we have work to do.

Japan is what happens when you focus on yourself.

American individualism struggles to coexist with authority and the social contract, both of which are vital to creating orderly and efficient societies such as Japan. Yet these same principles can give rise to something far darker when the wrong ruler ascends, turning discipline into tyranny…cough cough WW2 Japan, Great Leap Forward China, Nazi Germany

Seems to be a common phenomenon everywhere.

What makes Tokyo work is density all over, great transit and people walk everywhere. Outside of NYC and a few areas in DC, Chicago, SF we don't do any of that well in the US.

I think this is a holdover/hangover from the non-conformist movement of the 60s, it is also a bastardization of it, you can "be yourself"and still maintain morals, principle, self-respect, and common decency

Because we designed our cities off of homesteads and cars, not walkability.

Sweet. Much easier to accomplish when the culture and ethnicity is monolithic, and diversity isn't shouting in your face.

Average Tokyo apartment representation:

Americans, and even most Europeans, would not live in that. Would the average baw's wife put up with a single toilet shared between multiple bars and restaurants that you have to go outside to access? Cause that's also Tokyo in plenty of places.

It's really not fair to compare Tokyo to all of Japan. Its population runs from 14 M in the city proper to 36 M in the immediate surrounding area. ( Chicago is approximately 2.6 M) My son lives in Nagoya, the 4th largest city & its population is only 2.3 M. He & his wife & 2 young kids live in a normal-sized American-type home. Not an apt. The biggest difference is there are very little yards. Because of its almost overwhelming size, Tokyo is a vertical city, all its buildings go up & up & up.
