Or kids, right? That sort of proves my point. Remaining absolutely silent would be great, but in reality, that’s not going to happen. Speaking in a low voice to a 911 dispatcher isn’t going to give your position away in a locked down classroom with a closed door.

The odds of you dying in a car wreck are extremely slim. Do you think seat belts are a waste of money?
Before this gets spun into something I’m not even arguing. I’m not arguing whether or not you should be forced to wear them.

My point is that there’s way more people that are going to be screaming and yelling in that situation than not. Would that be ideal? Yes. But unfortunately most people are stupid and don’t do that.

Right, I agree with you. So does it really matter if there’s one more person on the phone with 911 talking?
The whole turn off the lights and remain quiet to the shooter doesn’t know people are in the room is pie in the sky stuff. Most of the time, the shooter is looking for easy targets knowing that time is limited. They aren’t skipping classrooms because they think they are empty, they’re skipping classrooms because the door is locked and would take some effort to get into.
Without straying too far off topic, I just really don’t see how this drastically improves response times.

Maybe it doesn’t. Idk. I just think the more options you provide the better.
Overall I think the best system is what we do here in Wichita. There’s 3 armed people in our school at all times. 1 Wichita PD and 2 security guards. I don’t see why the government can’t fund that across the board but at least the app is some sort of effort.

Does it? This suggests that it still contacts a dispatcher.
Yes, but it also alerts the authorities immediately if there is a shooter. If you've called 911 for anything you know they're just a conduit to people that can actually do something. This app gets the message there immediately.

Can you provide and example when this would happen?

I would much rather see $4M go to something like this than an app.

These nationwide numbers/trends are irrelevant. Parents don't care that gang violence is down, which is the bulk of those historical and current numbers. What worries the suburban mom is some wackjob shooting up a decent school.

It will take way more than 4 mil to put 3 armed guards in each school in any city of size. Quick calc says 4 mil buys 66.6 schools getting 3 guards at 60k/year. So in my district, it would cost 41.4 million.

Not every school needs three. We have 1150 kids in our school, some of which have gang ties. Not every school has the same issues. The school I was in as a para before teaching had 1 guard/officer for about 800 kids but it was a magnet school.

But a psycho doesn't care if the kids are well behaved or not.
Posted on 8/30/19 at 12:11 am to Zappas Stache
What does that have to do with how many resource officers are needed in a building? Why would i station the same amount of officers at Wichita Heights High School with 1150 students as I would Patterson High School in middle of nowhere Louisiana with 500 students?
And risk factor does play apart anyway. A school with a larger number of students and a larger number of gang ties is more likely to have violent crimes.

I thought we were talking about protecting kids from psychos. If we are talking about controlling kids then that's different.....and where I live. no school is less than about 700 kids and some single schools have 2 separate buildings. My point is, armed guards in every school gets very expensive and takes money away from dealing with problems that are more common.

When you hear kids saying they are scared to go to school each day because of shootings it’s sad and misguided.
This is not something I hear. Maybe others do, but I haven't. If they are asked if it is a concern...sure. However, I don't think it is something on their mind most mornings. After an event somewhere being put on the news sure, most days...no. Most kids seem to "fear" (aka have anxiety about) testing, social cliques, and typical internal angst (especially teenagers when puberty hits).
Adults and the media have created this mindset that they need to be scared and constantly on guard which is absurd.
Fear...no
Constantly on guard...yes.
It is part of parenting and teaching.
We are advovates for their future. Part of that equation is attempting to create a safe learning environment. This app is just an added component.
Just my .02.

I’m talking about protecting kids from gun violence in general. There’s no guarantee that it has to be a psycho.

It's to hopefully steer Future potential educators to be teachers in inner City schools that may have been hesitant with the recent uptick in culcha. Or to give a false sense of security to try and slow attrition. Instead of just taking the money and using it to better fund eachers

We have them in banks, schools are the next logical step.

Contributes to the idea that you need to constantly feel scared and on guard at school.
My two sons who are school aged are in far more danger from suburban women driving around town while posting to Facebook about "Common Sense Gun Laws" then they are at school.
Of course, the issue is not really about school safety, so...

There is nothing more Louisiana than no bid contracts during election season

You are right, we have had it for two years now and it knows what classroom i am in and will notify admins. and resource officer. It has Fire,911, medical, police and staff assist. I like it.
