He told everyone that his immediate family members had the recipe, yet after his death, they never bring up Starlite again. This substance is supposed to not only be revolutionary such that it would save millions of lives, but it would make them fabulously wealthy. And they are just sitting on it?
They have s website if you are interested in it.

And a link to their crowdfunding campaign...
Connnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

So, to recap, we either have a miracle secret taken to the grave after two decades, or that secret was passed to his family, who is now playing the same bullshite games that the original "inventor" played: asking for "funding" from everyone, including the general public. If there was merit in the formula, they would sell it for a staggering amount of money. What on earth do they need funding for?
After quickly going through their site, it's whine after moan about how they are still approaching everyone about this miracle substance, yet no one is interested. Not private industry, not NASA, not their congressman, no one. And per Occam's Razor, that's because...
Starlite. Is. A. Con.

Sounds like it’s a con, but how did he win the contest?

In a previous job I have seen so many of these “amazing inventions” it isn’t funny. All of these are made by non industry experts, and tested by non industry experts. I promise if the technology had a smidgen of truth to it their would be investors clamoring to get in on it. But I guarantee that it is all hogwash.
I bet if you look into how the material works it violates at least one of Newton’s laws.
In fact I used to call these people newton inventors.

I don't believe anything a hair dresser claims.

Now, I don’t know if it had the properties he claimed but because he was sloppy could never reproduce it or whether the entire thing was a con, but I just don’t buy his bullshite.
There seems to be enough 3rd party corroboration and interest that the claims seem legit. It has to be either a flaw that limits mass production or inability to reproduce like you mentioned.
I also don't buy the claims that companies could have had this had they been willing to buy it outright. If it's as revolutionary as it appears to be nobody would buy it? Even if he just stumbled upon a limited supply of alien plastic in the forest one day, I would think the companies/agencies interested so far would want to buy it outright so that they could reverse engineer it and be the only ones with the tech.

IF it were real and had the properties they suggest, the CIA would’ve snatched it with the quickness. Tbh, they probably did anyway just to see if the claims were true

If this stuff was real, spaceX would coat all their stuff in it. Or they would have stolen it. This is a total con job.

First thing that came in my mind. If this were legit, SpaceX would have gleefully bought it at almost any cost.

I agree something isn't adding up but whats the deal with all these passed test by reputable agencies?

Not bad. Not fr33, but not bad.

Looks like it is an ablative substance. Not a permanent thermal insulation.
