on line makes me think of simply being on the internet. I've never heard it any other way besides standing "in line".

People that say "on line" are the same people who say that someone can "do the splits".

It's an affectation of the wannabe uppercust types, roughly equivalent to "I live in First Street", an anachronism which Gore Vidal tried to defend

However it's more forgivable than the unspeakably vile "on accident", which deserves automatic disemboweling

Wrong. It’s a northern thing. Everyone in NY says “on line”.

Never heard this in Upstate NY.

I had to stand on line for thirty minutes last time I made groceries.

In line. There is a line of people, and I'm in that line. If there was a line on the floor and I was standing on it, I guess I could be on that line.

This might be one of those things like louisianans and "making groceries" in that there's that one way that they say it, then there's the correct way that the entire rest of the country says it.

The phrase “on line” was used in The Godfather when Kay was speaking about all the people waiting to see Micheal or the old man can’t remember which, but it was used.

Depends on if it is the x-axis, or y-axis.
