Does anyone know anyone who buys these raffle tickets and won a prize?

Just found out about it today.Tickets are $100,bought 1 for the raffle in Shreveport and going to buy 1 for the one in Lake Charles when tickets go on sale.

I’ve given a good bit to St.Judes in the past, few years ago I switched my major donations to Shriner’s Hospitals.
Seems like a good way to support St Judes,I don’t buy Powerball or MegaMillions tickets so why not.

Read fine print, you need to be in the jurisdiction of where the house is.

Also be ready to pay taxes on the home if you win.

Yes, St. Jude is a legit giveaway, it's not rigged.

we've bought a few. Not sure I'd want to live in any of the ones in the lafayette area. They are nice houses, don't get me wrong, but I'd rather take the money from selling it, and buy a nice piece of property and build something.

Yep. Hell of a capital gain. There will be income tax due on it immediately. And it has to be paid in as an estimate, not at the end of the year or there will be penalties if you wait. If you even can take possession without paying it. Which I kind of doubt they do not require you to pay that up front. I'd be surprised.

The good news is, well other than you just won a free home, is that your basis is the value of the home when you are awarded it. The value you pay the income tax on. If you sell it for the same amount, no capital gains tax.

I know someone that won in Lafayette, stayed in the house a couple years then sold it. Not sure if that was a requirement.

They did have to take out a mortgage on the house to pay taxes

I was friends with a kid a couple decades ago in school whose mom won. They were already wealthy and didn't move into it. I think they rented it and eventually sold it? Though I'm not sure.

They said it was pretty poorly built with builder grade everything, but I'm sure that's not always the case.

Yes, I worked with a guy whose wife bought a ticket and they won the dream house sometime in the early 2000’s. Can’t remember the exact year

Don’t you have to pay the taxes on it or some sort of fee situation to actually accept the house?

You need to live in the area to purchase tickets.

You cant sell it or mortgage it before the taxes are paid on the income. Many people aren't able to take possession of these homes because of this fact.

I bought one this year. I used to buy one every year when my kids were younger. I wanted to make sure I did my part to ensure that St. Jude was available in the event that my kids ever needed it.

Fun fact- the Dream Home started in Shreveport. Dr. Donald Mack somehow got a modular home (not trailer, but a step above it) donated to him or offered to him to sell for a fundraiser back around 1990. Now the house they build in Shreveport is (allegedly) worth over $700,000. It always raises over $1.5 million in Shreveport, and there are at least 30-40 different Dream Home giveaways around the country now.
