It doesn't cost the $20K plus people collect on these sites, either .. $10K or so ? Sure .. The rest is income .. That site begs for fraud too ..

Kids don't usually have to pay out of their pockets to bury their parents .. That is what life insurance is for ..

Only price I know of was 12k for one of my grandparents. They're already had their own burial plot though.

FYI-I have a policy that covers ALL my children (to age 25) with a 15k burial policy. It costs a whopping $3.55 a month, or $42.60 per year.
Not knocking his Mom, just informing you. The shite is basically free.

I didn't teach the 16 year old, but I knew him somewhat...from countless conversations. He had a chip on his shoulder, but he wasn't on my radar as one who would commit murder. I am actually shocked. Had it been one of thirty others, I would not be shocked.
My prayers go out to the parents and family whose lives have been turned upside down due to senseless violence.

Any clue on what brought on the altercation?

Who the frick stabs somebody to death at the age of 16? Such an intimate way of killing someone. I really hope they try him as an adult and throw the book at him.

No, I was simply told early this morning the one of students was the one who stabbed the other. I nothing about the actual event--at least no more than any of you already know. I cannot name him, of course.

It cost us 15k to bury my brother. But the whole industry is designed to prey upon vulnerable people.

Point being, these GoFundMe accounts go well north of $30K .. Where does the rest go ?

To the families? I don't know. No one is forced to donate to these things so I have a hard time getting worked up over it.
But it could be a very nice scheme for money laundering AKA breaking bad.

as a parent, how can you not be financially responsible to set aside enough money to cover any unexpected losses or mechanical breakdowns?

It's a complex law but I don't see how it applies to a situation where a teacher knows the name of a student that is involved in a situation outside of an educational setting.

I don't know all the legalities involved, but in this situation (I'm assuming), Stabby goes to school where he teaches, so him identifying the kid by name could violate FERPA. Even if he doesn't technically violate FERPA and his school district somehow found out about it, they may give him shite about it, including the FERPA question. It just isn't worth disclosing--the police will eventually name the kid.
