I had all the same experiences, but during the early 90's. Catholic school with no nonsense nuns!
I can remember when the principle got a new paddle with holes drilled in it. She called me into the office just to wave it in front of me. I recall exactly how I felt with the air whistling through the paddle as she swung it. May not be deemed acceptable now, but her technique worked on me.

I got whoopins and in the "time out" chair. That time out chair was the worst because it was in the corner of the room where everyone would see and it was extremely embarrassing.

Spanking.
Teacher would walk up behind daydreaming or misbehaving kids and pick them up out of their desk by pulling up on the hair at the hairline at the bottom of your neck. Good times.

About 3 months into the school year my first grade teacher took away recess from the entire class until we could "learn to behave" which ended up lasting for the rest of the year.
She also made us have silent lunch everyday. While all the kids in the lunchroom could talk.
Needless to say she was gone by the time I started second grade.

They beat the shite out of us. Maybe it worked on some of them. It just made me angrier and more defiant. I wasn't the only one. It was a source of pride among the boys if you didn't flinch.

Ok. then we werent the only tortured little kids. Makes me feel a little better hearing the stories. Funny those memories seem the most i remember about certain teachers and nothing else.

When I was in lower elementary if you were talking or cutting up in class the teacher would put you out in the breezeway. Mr. Cherry, the principal, would walk by every 20 minutes or so with his paddle. If you were in the hall there was a 90% chance you were getting an arse whooping.
Is that all he did at work? Walk around spanking children all day?

Telling a student to shut up without the parents trying to file a law suit. Ahh those were the days.

Draw a small circle on the chalk board and make the child keep their nose within the circle in front of the class. Kneeling in the corner. Eat lunch at a separate table by themselves. Spend recess facing a wall.
All very humiliating for a child.

In 10th grade, our band director threw a trash can at us b/c we couldn't play something right.

5th grade had brothers at a certain school telling students to kneel outside in September on rough concrete saying the Rosary for 30 minutes at a time after talking in class.
Or if sleeping in class they flipped desks.
Or if talking over shoulder again, you were forcibly removed from your desk and yelled at (with feet off the ground).
It's a pity that style of discipline is gone. It was effective.

Axe handles and bamboo poles are especially effective learning tools.

I was in day care at a baptist church when I was like 6 or 7. Got into an argument with some kid and said something inappropriate. The church employee poured liquid soap in each of our hands and made us eat it then go to the bathroom and wash it out. I was in there for fifteen minutes rinsing suds out of my mouth.
