I hated school. I went to vo-tech for auto body and after working at a body shop for 3 yrs I joined the Coast Guard. After 10yrs I realized I was smarter than the officers I worked for - so I got my degree and became an officer. Some people got to learn the hard way.
Thankfully both of my kids are students at LSU. We didn't have TOPS in Virginia (where I am from) and college cost a LOT more than Louisiana.

Skilled workers (who can pass a drug test and background check)

Put him in touch with a military recruiter

Yes, but the money and demand in Louisiana is in industrial construction and they all require drug tests.

Unless he's going for something specialized(engineer, lawyer, doctor, accountant) college is basically paying tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars for a piece of paper with his name on it after however many years it takes to get it.
There's nothing wrong with going straight to work. Chances are the knowledge and skills he will need in whatever career path he chooses will all be learned from work experience, not the classroom. If he can prove he's good at whatever he wants to do and is good at networking, those are the things that are going to lead to a successful career. Not whatever bullshite he is "learning" in a college classroom

Well that's no fun.
I have family in various "skilled labor" fields across the country, let's just say most people would be shocked at how common drug use is.
Crane operators: potheads, laborers: potheads, carpenters working on the table saw: stoned out of their minds.

When you bust arse all day in a labor job you deserve to smoke smoke little pot. Anyone who has worked in Ina warehouse will tell you that

Yes they are, in most places in the country and in most industries, that's the case. In Petrochemicals, refining, and oil&gas, you have to pass a drug test. Soon, they'll be switching to a new test that will absolutely screw over even the occasional user.

Trying to farm not stoned is boring as shite.

There is a shortage right now. Increased labor costs were a large factor in the Motiva expansion not happening.

As someone who's worked in a warehouse, I whole-heartedly agree. However, OSHA and Homeland Security do not (most plants are considered terrorist targets so homeland is heavily involved in their safety and security policies).

I make $85k plus with no degree. I am in sales and sit at a desk all day.

Across the whole construction industry, especially industrial. We're fighting raising rates just to stay competitive, and to keep skilled craftsman.

I had WAYYYYYY too many classmates drop out of college. They thought it was what they were supposed to do, and ended up costing their parents thousands over it.
I don't think you should force someone who truly doesn't want to go, because chances are, you'll be the one hurting from it.

Of course he can. It's asinine that people even question this. It just shows how much bullshite is out there when this debate comes up.
HVAC, welder, machinist, electrician, plumber, mechanic, maintenance techs, inspection, etc. You also have jobs in the railroad, oilfield & truck driving industries that pay very well too.
