This one's simple:
Whenever a trend has been popular for a long enough time, the antithesis of that trend will start to become popular with time. The trend has been towards less and less visible socks over the last decade so now some people are opting to go in the complete opposite direction. It makes them stand out and be noticed. If a woman is hot, she can pull off anything she wears. Once average women start seeing hot women wearing something, they inevitably copy it. That's what is starting to happen with crew socks. Long socks are seen as a "hot nerd" look for girls and is often associated with "school girl" fantasies. I just hope that they don't stop with crew socks and that if they're going to wear socks, that they just go ahead and go all the way up to knee or over-knee socks.
