Locals reported, and official marine biologists are now confirming that a whale has been spotted in the Mobile Bay.
The whale was spotted early this morning about 1/4 mile west of an area called Red Gully off the Eastern Shore of the Mobile Bay.
It is reported to be trying to beach itself.

I was curious so I looked it up.

Spermaceti (sperm oil), from which the whale derives its name, was a prime target of the whaling industry, and was sought after for use in oil lamps, lubricants, and candles. Ambergris, a solid waxy waste product sometimes present in its digestive system, is still highly valued as a fixative in perfumes, among other uses.

That’s going to be something to see.
In the early 70’s one beached( species unknown but probably 30 or 40 feet long) at Isles Dernieres ( Last Island) on the West side of Whiskey Pass.
It looked like every shark in the GOM came to feed. We pulled up next to it in a 14’ aluminum boat. The sharks were in a feeding frenzy. The water was boiling around the whale and it was rocking our little boat.
Very exciting.

Spemaceti is valuable. But look up ambergris. That’s what you want to find.

The sperm whale definition mention that beachcombers search for ambergris, but it didn't define it's use. Learn something new everyday!
quote:
Ambergris (/'æmb?rgri?s/ or /'æmb?rgr?s/, Latin: ambra grisea, Old French: ambre gris), ambergrease, or grey amber, is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull grey or blackish colour produced in the digestive system of sperm whales.[1] Freshly produced ambergris has a marine, fecal odor. It acquires a sweet, earthy scent as it ages, commonly likened to the fragrance of rubbing alcohol without the vaporous chemical astringency.[2]
Ambergris has been highly valued by perfumers as a fixative that allows the scent to endure much longer, although it has been mostly replaced by synthetic ambroxide.[3] Dogs are attracted to the smell of ambergris and are sometimes used by ambergris searchers.
