Kind of but not really. It is formed in the digestive track around some kind of foreign object. Typicall a Giant Squid beak that is caught in the whales throat.

I’m going from memory so I need to look it up and read up on it.

I know the oil is valued to lubricate some fini instruments because it never conceals.

Whale oil used to be added to automatic transmission fluid.

Spemaceti is valuable. But look up ambergris. That’s what you want to find.

75,000 dollars for 1.5 kg

The sperm whale definition mention that beachcombers search for ambergris, but it didn't define it's use. Learn something new everyday!

quote:
Ambergris (/'æmb?rgri?s/ or /'æmb?rgr?s/, Latin: ambra grisea, Old French: ambre gris), ambergrease, or grey amber, is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull grey or blackish colour produced in the digestive system of sperm whales.[1] Freshly produced ambergris has a marine, fecal odor. It acquires a sweet, earthy scent as it ages, commonly likened to the fragrance of rubbing alcohol without the vaporous chemical astringency.[2]

Ambergris has been highly valued by perfumers as a fixative that allows the scent to endure much longer, although it has been mostly replaced by synthetic ambroxide.[3] Dogs are attracted to the smell of ambergris and are sometimes used by ambergris searchers.

Low man on a whaling ship was sent to retrieve it if it was present....supposedly a very nasty job involving crawling into and through the whales digestive track....

Many of the crew on a whaling ship were shanghaied....knocked in the head at a waterfront bar only to wake up on a whale boat several miles offshore. Cruise lasted as long as the hold was not full...a couple of years sometime. The only way off was to find a replacement.

I’ve heard it has become stuck numerous times since first spotted last week. They’ve said it has been looking increasingly sick.

We might have to do what they did in Oregon 50 years ago if this whale doesn’t make it:
