My husband and I lose our shite on our 14-year-old son when he leaves his dirty plate at the table after eating. We, too, wonder what is wrong with him, but after reading this thread, I actually think he might be ahead of the curve.

Military.
Or he is lost forever. His bad habits will be set in for life.
I got lucky my kids are driven. I can see how it would be a struggle these days if mine were not.
I blame it on the video games.

Crayon eating jokes aside. I am not sure even the Marines can fix someone who can't manage to close the front door when they leave the house or turn off the stove when they are done.

Trust me they've seen worse

So now parenting matters? I’m confused

Of course parenting matters, but children are not blank slates, no matter what you do, some turn out great, some are stinkers. I have seen many people who have worked their butts off to raise their kids right, but sometimes no matter what you do, a bad apple gets in the basket.

I bet you are driven. It is not luck. Give yourself a lot of credit.

Shouldn't he be off at college or something at 19? Is he just doing nothing?

I thought I was losing my mind. It took two days, but at least someone shares my thoughts.

We punish him by not allowing time with friends, take away the things that matter most to him (phone and other electronics) and he starts doing what he is required to do but only for a short while. Then it’s rinse & repeat. And naturally when he fricks up we get attitude.

You are punishing your son at 19? I’m sorry but if sounds like you have enabled and babied him and allowed this to happen. You can’t expect him to act like an adult if you haven’t truly taught him how to adult.
