Residents, officials wary of Airbnb spreading in Baton Rouge neighborhood

WBRZ

An EBR councilwoman wants to link the parish to a lucrative new industry, but without compromising the character of certain historic neighborhoods.

When the popular home-rental service Airbnb came to town a few months ago, residents in at least one Baton Rouge neighborhood were concerned.

"They recognize that there we some Airbnb's that had located here in their neighborhood and they wanted to have some discussion about the impact it could potentially have on this neighborhood," Councilwoman Tara Wicker said.

Spanish Town, which sits in Wicker's district, is known to be a welcoming place, but maybe not to this new industry.

"One of the things that we definitely don't want is to look up one day and Spanish Town, or other neighborhoods that we've grown to love and enjoy, are places where people no longer can live. It's all commercialized," Wicker said.

EBR hasn't figured out how to tax it yet.

Why would anyone need Air BnB in Baton Rouge?

The 48yr old woman with 12 cats really shouldn't have so much influence.

I fail to see so many people getting an Airbnb in Spanish town to the point where it would ever become a REAL problem

It’s almost as if the people that live in Spanish Town are overdramatizing things.

But the young gay couple that stayed down the street for the Spanish Town Parade parked in the street.

Nevermind that it probably increases property values and brings in more cash for homeowners. It competes with the hotels and we can't have that!

So you would have no problem if your neighbors started renting out their house to complete strangers?

How many HOA's would allow Airbnb?

Great news! I was just trying to figure out a new place to visit this fall. There’s so many things to see there now I’ve learned about on this board: traffic, flooding river, the north side cultural heritage, some truck nuts on the way to the plant in the mornings, etc.

Does anyone have a tour company they recommend that takes you around to see all these things?

Complete strangers would be an improvement for a lot of neighborhoods in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Mine doesn’t. Last time we had reports of a suspected air bnb operation in the neighborhood we rounded up the watch and flashbanged the place. They were lesbians too smdh

I've stayed in AirBnbs several times in BR. I generally prefer them over hotels

They fought pretty hard against a highly appropriate 3 story residential building that was going to replace 4 empty, dilapidated houses across from Arsenal Park.

Just nonsensical.

It's the best way to lure unsuspecting locals to a "historic, colorful" neighborhood in Central City New Orleans or just east of Downtown in Baton Rouge.

On the flip side, it does enable property owners to make some extra cash for events and probably helps push neighborhoods into a process of gentrification by encouraging people to improve their houses.

Because the hotels are complete shite. Stayed at a Marriot Courtyard for work a couple years ago and it was on the same level as a run down Motel 6. It is really amazing how shitty Baton Rouge is.
