Eh at this pace(assuming jealous and retarded democrats don’t ruin the human race) I think 20 yrs is a realistic timeframe

Anyone who has taken all of the required calculus courses for engineering and has passed the PE exam is more qualified than Musk to speak on engineering.

Will be interesting to see how they address the radiation challenge.

This is one of the worst takes I’ve ever read on this site. He has a BA in Physics and a BS in Economics from Penn. I knew people at Penn that were aware of his talents when he was an undergrad. It’s also a well know fact that he has a unique ability to calculate engineering changes and their economic impact on the fly, which is one of the reasons SpaceX is so successful. I’ll acknowledge he underestimates timelines, but it’s pathetic you can’t acknowledge his success.

People said the same thing about the steam engine, transcontinental railroad, the internet, etc.

Space x talked about building servers in space. Which is beyond stupid, would be extremely difficult to cool in space. We can barely power the space station.

I think they should stop Elon from making statements about space x.

That’s absurd. I have PEs in two disciplines, BTW. You are a typical weakling who hides behind credentials to protect yourself from open competition.

How does a city on the moon secure the future of civilization? The earth after a nuclear apocalypse would still be more hospitable than the lunar surface, not to mention have more resources.

Computing takes far less power in space, because of the super cold environment

Completely false.

It's extremely difficult to cool things in space. Space is a vacuum there is nothing to transfer the heat away. Only way to cool things is through radiation which is extremely inefficient. Space is literally a giant insulator.

To cool things take massive surface area.

It is extremely inefficient and difficult to cool things in space.

Elon shouldn't be speaking on these things

Depends where the server is, especially on the moon. If protected within a crater, it’s quite possible to cool it, while having solar arrays nearby to power the servers. Spacecraft routinely rotate to provide cooling, so it’s probable they can come up with an engineering solution. A lot of the naysayers sound like the European Space Agency in 2013 claiming reusable rockets were impossible.

Obviously that would reduce the solar loading. But servers generate a lot of heat in small spaces. Which is worst case scenario.

Space craft spin to keep them out of the sun to avoid the solar loading. Since there is no atmosphere it actually does not increase the cooling effect

Large surface area probably using liquid internally would be needed to radiate the heat away. It is much much less efficient than on earth.

The current issue would be very hard to solve because the way we design and build servers is very centralized heat.. would require large pumps to pump liquid away to large radiators

Quick Google says the space station uses 75-90 kw of power. Obviously the picture shows the massive radiator requirements.

AI-specific server racks frequently require 60–120 kW of power

You might start seeing the problem

Moon is way closer anyways. Nobody liked mars and its frozen ice poles!

Also with zero gravity easier to launch massive payloads offsite.

You can consolidate up there and then launch to mars

Exactly.

Plus, the apparent abundance of ice below the lunar surface provides a basis for LOX production for fuel.
