i racked up tons of miles, refund funds and status with southwest the past 7-8 years as the company i worked for through 2023 required using them. wasn't that bad as nearly all of their flights are direct from denver.
the pre-board has gotten out of control and a big reason i'm leaving. 15-30 fats and flat out liars boarding before people that have earned status. i've got maybe 2 more trips this year to keep a list through 12.31.26 and then it's back to united more or less for good. i'll still bounce back and forth based on time of departure/arrival and no stops.
girlfriend works for united but her stupid family has all her companion passes. working on that

Or fly on a non-trash airline and pick your seat when you book…

All of the BS with boarding is now solved and the airline makes more money

Both of these can't happen. If the boarding BS is solved, people aren't bringing carry-ons, so the airline isn't making more money. If the airline is making more money, people are bringing carry-ons, and the boarding BS is still going on.

It’s like in the last 5 years or so, every company has tried to find every way to squeeze your nuts as best they can from every angle. It’s pretty exhausting. fricking private equity.
You should blame the people who pay for it. If people spent more judiciously the nut squeezing wouldn't be so tight.

Southwest was basically the only airline I used because of this and now they take it away?

So let me get this right, Southwest goes from 5 years ago being:

- the cost effective option
- the easiest change policy
- free baggage

to:

- just as expensive as nicer airlines with better tech
- limited non-stops flights
- baggage and change policies no better than other airlines

good luck to them
Probably the biggest corporate f*ckup since "New Coke".

It's a shame what they've done to Herb's airline.

You'd think a company like SWA would figure out how to market this better. Just include this in your pricing, and no one would ever know. This was one of their key differentiators that set them apart from other airlines.

Maybe on your routes from Bumfrick to Bumfart, there aren't this many, but on major routes, they certainly get into the dozens.

I counted 47 "preboarders" when I was leaving Philadelphia going to Atlanta, while waiting in the A List preferred line. I emailed Southwest in line and got a $50 flight credit voucher.

Seriously, the abuse of open seating policy by certain people ruined it, and it undermined Southwest efforts to sell the unused A1-A15 slots. The assigned seating, in the larger front seats for A List is the only way to push back, pushing the non-business fares into the rear open seating area now. At least the preboarders will start behind the exit row now.

Airlines pay a 7.5% federal excise tax on ticket revenue only; fees for stuff that aren't ticket fare aren't subject to the tax, like change fees, "service animal" fees, baggage fees, seat selection fees, etc. The tax code incentivizes the endless fees.

I just don’t see what differentiates SWA from competitors now. Their offerings are similar in price but flying out of crappier airports using antiquated technology. Is there any aspect of the consumer offering where SWA is better than their competitors? Nope. So why would I fly them instead of United, Delta, or American?

It’s a typical PE strategy.
We’re gonna earn more money from bag fees but lose an equal amount (or more) in passenger revenue.
But gives them an excuse to offload planes and defer deliveries to keep cash flow higher.

Delta, American, United likely going to also limit capacity this summer to stretch their RASM.

Elliot needs to be Llewelyn Moss'd. Their union ringleaders love sucking management off over these changes as well. If they want to increase profitability why don't they condition employment on the crews living within 100 miles of their base instead of flying them all over the country. And if I'm paying full legacy fare enough with the jokes and the DEI hires.

I won't fly Spirit/Frontier/National but I sure as hell will fly with an airline who doesn't limit their aircraft to Boeings that fall out of the sky. I'll happily fly out of the domestic terminal at O'hare rather than the international terminal or Midway. Also an airline that doesn't allow their "its" pronoun people to put all their shite in the overhead area meant for the bulkhead passengers.

Not necessarily germane to the conversation.

My (early days of) SWA fun...

SWA came in to existence bout the time I graduated from college...

I don't remember all the specifics, but I seem to remember they offered a random, marketing promo $99 roundtrip flight every so often from JAN to one of their other hubs (LAX, Boston, Houston, etc...).

I'd buy it regardless of where it was going (or if I knew anyone there), pack my rucksack, and phuck up said destination for a long weekend...

Good Times.

So you go months without washing clothes?

I went to Vegas for 5 days for the LSU game and the only thing I had was the largest clear bag (12×12 x 6 stadium approved) with travel sized toothpaste and deodorant, 4 t-shirts, 3 shorts. I wore jeans and button down long sleeve shirt. Only brought the shoes on my feet.

Clothes described above can roll (not fold) really small. Had to do this because I had to go to the airport directly after the game.

In summary, you can pack a lot in a small bag as long as you don't need dressy clothes (which you could also wear on a flight instead of packing).

I remember the days when you got an entire hot meal and fresh squeezed juice on almost every Delta flight

I think on-line searches and always seeing listings from cheapest to most expensive has screwed up airline services a bit.

The day you book the ticket the only pain you feel is the ticket price so many people save $8 and push inconveniences and extra cost into the future, so airlines put every effort into optimizing “that value” that shows up in a Google search.

It’s like the people taking 10 minutes out of their day driving to the other gas station to save $0.82 on a tank of gas. Because of how gas prices are marketed - you see 10 reminders of it to and from work regardless if you need gas, many people and up hypersensitive to it.

I’ve had a friend visit me and book the earliest flight back because it was $20 cheaper, this was of course until he had to Uber to the airport because I wasn’t waking up a 3AM on my day off to drive him to the airport, when he could have just taken a noon flight for a little more money…

In the early days of SWA they were duking it out with Braniff in Texas. One way to Hobby as low as $15 I believe.

Yep, I fly SW more than United simply bc of the airport..It is closer for most and being able to park at Eco and walk to and especially back from the terminal instead of dealing with the parking busses and construction mess makes SW worth it.
