Southwest may be fricked up the arse here
It only requires “reasonable accommodations.” Pretty much the only thing that could potentially screw them is if the mother offered some form of compromise such as a face shield and they rejected that.
ADA doesn’t give you the legal backing to just show up saying the rules doesn’t apply to me because of XYZ.

anyway, here is some light reading on ADA and mask wearing specifically. Think it would be a good case. Southwest has a good argument for undue burden, but they better hope the dotted their Is and crossed there Ts before sending this family on their way

Look you wont get an argument from me on that...but again, and another poster said it too, parents either:
A) didnt check ahead of time and put the kid in a traumatic situation when a flight attendant has to do their job
Or....
B) checked ahead of time and then said frick that "we'll do it anyway" and put the kid in a traumatic situation when a flight attendant has to do their job
Not even talking about how the news gets called afterwards...its like a kid running to mom when they dont get their way.
Any sympathy and/or empathy I may have for the kid is trumped by disdain for the parents.

What’s the functional difference, with concern for the virus, between a 2 yo and a 3 yo?
I mean it seems like we are splitting hairs here, and for what reason? Oh this 2yo, who isn’t going to get or spread the virus, can fly without a mask. But this 3 yo, who also isn’t going to get or spread the virus, has to wear a mask and oh we’re going to deplane you And cost resources and make a whole ruckus and have a news story about it and probably some legal nonsense...
Does that really make sense?
ETA: and honestly I don’t even care about the artistic part. The whole thing is illogical.

This is a non-story. The trip just didn't work out because kid was having a rough time.

I don’t necessarily believe her that on her first flight the kid refused to wear a mask before they took off and the attendants allowed it. I’m sure the kid just took it off once they were ready to depart and flight attendants couldn’t see him.
The rules are clearly stated but she just assumed they wouldn’t apply to her for some selfish reason.

I'm on the "just wear your mask in crowds" side of the fence but there needs to be exceptions and this is one of them. Give the kid a window seat on the first row with his mom on the other side and it really shouldn't be a big deal

The only reason officially that kids younger than 2 aren't recommended is because of breathing issues, not viral spread.
So while you're right about the evidence in that regard, you're fighting the wrong battle with the powers that be.
Though it does seem odd that in such a scenario you'd allow younger than 2 to travel at all, but if you're trying to find consistency throughout all these virus policies, good luck.

I was replying to poster calling parents assholes & acting as if they were trying to get one over on SW
They flew once with no issue
I don’t think they expected an issue on the return trip

My son goes to therapy and I see quite a few kids on the spectrum wearing hats like this. Sometimes it just takes a little effort from parents. I have learned in the world of special education and the special needs arena, you will run into parents with a chip on their shoulder. They expect the world to bend to them and adapt to them and make no effort to be considerate of others. Generally, there are lazy special needs parents. Not saying that's these parents are, but it's possible they are the difficult type.
Point being, did they ever try to get their child to wear one of these...

Not for the choice of trying to bringing the kid on the plane.
And not even for being annoyed that they were inconvenienced by the policy.
I based that statement on the self righteous indignation (she even says in the article she feels certain people shouldn’t be applied to the rules) that her opinion should determine how the company runs things so she is going to run to the media for not getting her way.

The point is there shouldn’t be a battle to fight in the first place. Kids don’t need to be wearing masks. Especially ineffective ones. I don’t care that he doesn’t like shite on his face so much as it’s a pointless exercise.
Maybe we should make the kid wear a condom too so he doesn’t get an STD.
