I would video everything and stay inside. You’ve got an attic, just in case, right?

If you have a single stage snow blower, then yeah, every 4-5 inches go out and clear the driveway. If you have a two stage one, then you are good to go. Wait till it stops then go ahead and do it.
It is not worth it, shoveling every couple of hours...

BTW - Left BTR 14 years ago and never looked back. I will take the snow and the cold over the heat and the humidity any day.

I didn't understand any of that.

For the snow dwellers, what is the strategy for snow on huge powder days? We are nearing a foot so far. I used the snow blower this morning and my wife & I have cleared it with a shovel 5 times throughout the day. My wife just made me shovel so it doesn't build up too much for tomorrow AM (which I didn't want to do

Don't bother until it stops. You really should know this already if you've been here longer than a year

Drive through that shite and get my arse to the mountain as soon as possible.

I can just let it build up, I pretty exclusively get powdery snow. Get about a foot and driving out is tough, so Ill get the blower out then.

Just wait till it stops though.

I’ve lived in Minnesota my whole life. Just wait until it stops snowing, then blow it. Why make more work for yourself? I don’t know anyone who has shoveled multiple times during the day.

I usually just shovel the end of the drive so we can get out or ignore it and blast thru it with my truck.

If you don’t want to shovel use a leaf blower and go out there when it starts and periodically to blow it off.

Why do you need to clear the sidewalk? Just walk in/on it. IDK, I’m in Alabama. Not my issue.

Yeah depends on how deep and if it’s wet or not (that’s what she said…)

I used to shovel our driveway when we moved to KC. I’ve got a bad neck with budging discs so can’t really do it now. We have a pretty large pad driveway behind our house too which makes it difficult. I found a high school kid on Nextdoor. He was only gonna charge me $35 but I gave him $50. Best money spent. Plus he will probably have to come back this weekend.

I grew up in the upper midwest/great lakes region and live in the Midwest now. If you're not waiting until it's over you're wasting you time with powder snow. Wet snow absolutely clear as often as you want. That powder you blow is just going to go back to covering your concrete. The one exception would be first use of a new snow blower (just to check how you want to set the chute and direction). I ran mine near the backend of the first snow and then had to run it again a day later.

If you're living in a home you own and get frequent storms you need to ditch the shovels and get yourself a blower.

If its powder, just wait. Its light, you could do it with a broom. The wet, heavy stuff will kill you if you wait until its deep.

A Southerner Moves up North diary:

Dec 8. - It's starting to snow. The first of the season and the first I've seen in years. The wife and I took our hot buttered rums and sat by the picture window. Watching the soft flakes drift down, clinging to the trees and covering the ground. It was beautiful.

Dec 9. - We woke to a lovely blanket of crystal white snow covering the landscape. What a fantastic sight. Every tree and shrub covered with a beautiful mantle. I shoveled snow for the first time in my life and I loved it. I did both the driveway and our sidewalk. Later, the city snowplow came along and accidentally covered up our driveway with compacted snow from the street. The driver smiled and waved. I waved back and shoveled it again.

Dec 10. - It snowed an additional 6 inches last night and the temperature dropped to around 11 degrees. Several limbs on the trees and shrubs snapped due to the weight of the snow. I shoveled the driveway again. Shortly afterwards the snowplow came by and did his trick again. Much of the snow is now brownish-grey.

Dec 11. - Warmed up enough during the day to create some slush which soon became ice when the temperature dropped again. Bought snow tires for both cars. Fell on my a_ _ in the driveway; $145 to a chiropractor, but nothing was broken. More snow and ice expected today.

Dec 12. - Still cold. Sold the wife's car and bought a 4x4 in order to get her to work. Slid into a guardrail anyway and did considerable amount of dammage to the rear quarter panel. Had another 8 inched of the white sh_ _ last night. both vehicles covered with salt and crud. More shoveling in store for me today. That godd_ _ _ snow plow came by twice today.

Dec 13. - Two below zero outside! More fu_ _ _ _ _ snow. Not a tree or shrub on our property that hasn't been damaged. Power was off most of the night. Tried to keep from freezing to death with candles and a kerosene heater, which tipped over and nearly burned the house down. I managed to put out the flames, but suffered 2nd degree burns on my hands and lost my eyelashes and eyebrows. Car slid on the ice on way to emergency room and was totaled.

Dec 14. - Godd_ _ _ mother-fu_ _ _ _ _ white sh_ _ keeps coming down. Have to put on all the clothes I own just to get to the mailbox. If I ever catch that son-of-a-bi_ _ _ that drives the snowplow I'll chew open his chest and rip out his heart. I think he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then comes down the street about 100 mph and buries our driveway again. Power still off. Toilet froze and part of the roof is starting to cave in.

Dec 15. - Six godd_ _ _ more fu_ _ _ _ _ inches of fu_ _ _ _ _ snow and fu_ _ _ _ _ sleet and fu_ _ _ _ _ ice and god knows what other kind of fu_ _ _ _ _ white sh_ _ fell last night. I wounded the fu_ _ _ _ _ snowplow a_ _hole with an ice axe but he managed to get away. Wife left me. Car won't start. I think I'm going snow blind. I can't move my toes. Haven't seen the sun in weeks. More snow predicted. Wind chill is minus 22 fu_ _ _ _ _ degrees.

I'm moving back to Florida.

-always throw down some salt/ice melt down before a big snow.
-Go out every couple hours if you can but dont bother if its windy & steadily coming. Itll just drift right back up 15min. later
-depending on the temp when it falls will determine weight of snow..nothing worse than 32 degree snow/winter mix as its heavy AF. Gimme under 30 all day long. Light and fluffy.
-get the # for a good plow guy for over 6in (TWSS)

Grew up in Louisiana also but there is a reason I live in Florida now everything Honkus just said I will never have to do in my lifetime. You peeps that live in very cold and snowy places can have them.

Bought the wife a snow blower after I got sick of paying $100 a pop for the lawn care folks to clear it. I still end up doing it most of the time because I think it’s awesome shooting snow 100 feet in the air annd all over the place. Got almost a foot in Bettendorf, IA today. Different world than living in the south that’s for for sure.

Depends on the wind with powder.

You can snow blow your arse off and an hour later have to do it again.
