Good friend of mine just got admitted; I am trying to give him some insight on what to expect from 1L year in general, but more particularly the current atmosphere for good ol' baws who make the trip north every day.

The only SULC grads I know personally graduated years ago, and I'm sure it has changed.

Any recs on good/bad professors? Also any first-hand advice in general would be appreciated.

Are you allowed to work your first year? What about after, does the workload permit an internship or a job your second and third years?

He's got connections at the capitol, so I imagine he'll be making some moves into State politics during his three years of law school.

I know they are allowed to work. One of my co-workers has been at SULC the whole time I've worked with him (about 2 years)

Bust your arse your first year and transfer out anywhere else. You don't want the Southern Law grad distinction hanging over your head unless you are going to do PI, family law, or criminal. Business will steer clear if they see that degree.

Congrats to him on getting in to the Harvard of Baton Rouge. He is going to get the best legal education money can buy. Unlike LSU and Tulanr grads he will be ready to practice day one once he passes the bar.

Diverse classes and an excellent legal writing program!!

Is this the reputation of Southern now?

When I was in law school, LSU wasn't Yale, but it had the best reputation of law schools in the state. Maybe they've beefed-up their writing program to make gains. Not a bad idea, seems like something you could use to gain leverage with students, and writing is the majority of what we do, anyway.

100% accurate, I've been litigating for over a decade and can honestly say I've never won a case against a Southern grad./

If that's true, then you must have graduated in the 1950s

You dont have a choice who your profs are the first year.

You can work, but I doubt he will find the time with studying he will have to do.

The dynamics of my class were pretty laid back. Depending on the people he enrolled with it can be pretty competitive, but for the most part everyone seemed pretty cool.

As long as he isn't one of the many people who go to law school just to say they did, and trust me, SULC is full of them, he should be fine come the bar exam.
