Something to consider when advising young people to go into trade work?

Nothing wrong with trade schools, but always be skeptical of others telling you what's best for your children.

This is a great point and I’ve stumped many a coworker that said this exact point. Many more kids should absolutely be guided toward the trades. If my son or daughter want to go into the trades, it will be after college.

There's no frickin' way tech workers will go into the trades. Not in a million years.
Alot of them are Aspergery as frick, and the anxiety of having to work with real dudes would utterly frick them up.
When it comes to the tech bros, the trade dude and his "workin' man's PhD" ain't got jack shite to worry about.

How many are actual American citizens? How many are H-1B visa workers?

There are recipes for success in this. Some combo of being good at (and willing to truly master) your trade. Find a mentor. Not just “trade school.” Use AI and other tech to help in that regard.
Master the business and marketing side and network.
Document and run your business correctly with accountant and lawyer. This is another area where AI can eliminate a lot of busy work and keep those costs down.
Learn hiring and management skills that include being a non f-head tech or office type.
Find a niche trade with a significant barrier to entry, both skill and capital-wise.
Learn about financing and responsible/profitable use of debt and other investors (I’d stick w loans).
Someone with half a brain who’s more hands on, blue collar, country or just handy and good at figuring out physical shite can learn the business stuff and have an advantage over a desk jockey skinny triple pump caramel extra frothy latte sipper or tech geek who’s trying to be blue collar and skillful at a trade.
You can tell I’ve been thinking about this (mainly for my kids).
There are also some creative stackable skills and businesses. Hospitality. Property management. Agriculture.

You might want to factor in sheet metal workers, carpenters, machinists, roofers, concrete workers, etc.
I think a lot of inexperienced or apprentices could be absorbed, prepped for even bigger customer needs in 5 years or so.

You might be surprised. I was when I went into a plumbing supply house recently after not having gone to one in years. The same tired grumpy depressed looking country boys chain smoking cigs have retired and now you have tired grumpy depressed looking young men wearing gage earrings and huffing a vape.
