They aren't soft on it like New Orleans is. They have a mixture of poor blacks and rural white meth heads that keep things interesting. It's not without it's problems even though the area is nice.

Good medical community or do I have to drive into BR or Nola?

North Oaks is the big hospital there and they are pretty solid. Major trauma events get sent to Oschner in New Orleans or Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge, depending on where it is.

SLU is safe. I wouldn't consider it a "good school" though...but that depends on the ambitions of the student.

It's not competing with LSU, Tech, or even UL-Lafayette.

Ah...got ya. I think it's actually a better family community than college community. North Oaks Hospital system is prevalent in the area with plenty of quality providers BUT you're right in the middle of BR and the Northshore as well so you still have options of other systems like OLOL, St Tammany, Ochsner, etc.

SLU is okay but probably a better option for someone who lives in Hammond rather than someone who moves to hammond just to go to school.

Traffic can kind of be a headache but being accessible from I-59 and I-12 gives you multiple options.

Decent mall like area for shopping/gifts.

Crime isn't that much of an issue and they are pretty tough on those that violate it.

Good option for those who like outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and camping.

Fun town, nice mom & pop restaurant/bar scene. Easy drive to NOLA/BR with relatively low crime. It has a sketchy area but the police do a good job keeping that in check.
I spent 8 years living there - loved it.

It's not a failure factory like SUNO. They have a couple of competitive programs. But I would not send my kids there if they got into LSU.

Visit the Walmart in town around 5pm and you'll gather a ton of information.

The problem with living in Hammond is that you might encounter folks from Amite and Tickfaw. It’s just not worth it.

Disagree with this statement. In some many ways SLU is better than all those institutions. SLU has the top nursing and teaching programs in the state of Louisiana. The campus is very nice and you can get a great education from the institution. I know, I have degrees from two of the institution mentioned in the list above. Campus is far superior to UL-Lafayette in my opinion, not as good as LSU's campus.

Oh, I forgot to mention too. It's a sneaky good golf area (Oak Knoll, Carter Plantation and Cam2)

Never go there unless you want to die from your illness. St. Tammany hospital is a short distance away and will help you stay alive. Hammond is an awesome town, there are a few pockets of high violent crime around the edges.
