On the surface it appears to have a lot of things going for it. Can someone from that area or maybe spent time at SLU give me any insight? Tia.

It's a small city in southern Louisiana, and it catches both the Baton Rouge and New Orleans news stations.

In high school, I hooked up with a girl there that I had met on MySpace. That’s all I got

the Mansion is nearby

Generally nice people. You won't confuse it with Ann Arbor, Palo Alto, or Cambridge. But it's also not Tuscaloosa either.

I live here and it’s safe to say we have the worst drivers in the state. Not that bad of a little town though. Cool downtown area.

Once Trey Yuen closed, it's been downhill
Seriously, they have some decent places to eat
Good little small college town plus you are close to both Baton Rouge and New Orleans

The Hammond Song, a song about Hammond, Louisiana.

Hammond is a nice town.
40 minutes from baton-rouge
40 minutes from New Orleans
25 minutes from Northshore
But has everything it needs.
The bad parts are pretty well hidden.
Decent food. Decent bars.

What kind of context are you looking for?

Well, I've never been to heaven
But I've been to Hammond, La
Oh, they tell me I was born there
But I really don't remember
In Hammond, La, not Baton Rouge
What does it matter?
What does it matter?
Oh, I've never been to Lafayette.
But I kinda like the music
Say the ladies are insane there
And they sure know how to use it
They don't abuse it
Never gonna lose it
I can't refuse it, oh, oh

If you want to be considered trashy, then Hammond, America is the place for you

Not bad but Hammond High is kind of a shite School. Ponchatoula has a much better school system. Pumpkin Center is where I grew up and graduated from Ponchatoula.

Downtown Hammond is great.
The rest is kind of like Florida Blvd in BR.

I'm assuming you mean the "Hammond area" and not just Hammond proper. I like the area. Stay off I-12 because traffic there sucks.
It's a growing area, but in a slower, more sustainable way than the explosive suburban sprawl that is happening in western Livingston, Ascension Parish, or in Covington/Mandeville.
It used to be very similar to southern Mississippi, but SLU kind of kept it more diverse in the 20th century. It's also attracted a lot of older white Catholic people from the south shore since Katrina. And they brought some of their restaurant preferences and religion with them. And they also brought traffic jams too, but it isn't as bad in that respect as Mandeville or Covington.
It's easy to get to Baton Rouge or New Orleans. It's far enough north where you don't get storm surge from hurricanes, but they can still get a lot of wind (and they did last year with Ida). If you are buying a home there, you may want to consider a full home backup generator eventually. The area doesn't generally get tornadoes or a lot of snow/ice. It's hot as hell in the summer, and cold and rainy in the winter. Not much of a spring or fall.
Hammond has a cute downtown area with a couple of good restaurants and a train station. Most restaurants are geared towards families. SLU is kind of disappointing if you are expecting something like Miss. State or La Tech, but it's there and seems to be doing okay.

Are they tough on crime? Good medical community or do I have to drive into BR or Nola? Is SLU a good school that takes students' safety seriously? Demographics? Stuff like that. I'm looking to fully divest myself and son from BR essentially.
