No kidding. You can do plenty with a couple of billion in USD. The speculative asset - BTC - got you that far...crazy not to let a few billion ride.

That takes some balls to watch 54k grow into hundreds of millions
The balls were putting $54K into bitcoin back in 2011

Very likely someone who was fairly wealthy already. If this was some dude that really believed in crypto, and borrowed from his retirement account, he'd have cashed out a long time ago.

Yup, he could have purchased two very nice homes at that point in time with the cash. I’m guessing that amount was play money for him.

It may be that dude that lost his bitcoin information in the garbage and his been scouring landfills ever since.

Why would anyone sell BTC for USD when BTC is so useful for daily transactions and the USD is just fiat trash?
When you can get 9.6 billion in USD it doesn’t matter if it’s fiat trash.

No way in hell i would have held out until its value was 9.6B. I would have blown my load at 10mil.
Someone lost the piece of paper he wrote the password to the wallet on then found it 14 years later

"But, but, Bitcoin is a scam and only idiots buy it. " - morons

why sell when it's supposedly going to $1million?
Posted on 7/18/25 at 7:27 pm to DVinBR
It’s all marginal after the first $5bn.

I remember hearing Odell took his salary in bitcoin. Pretty sure it was later than 2011 but it must be pretty nice about now

A friend in college tried to talk me into buying 1k around that time
It was more complicated then to do it and I didn’t really understand it. He said he would set it all up I just needed to remember the password and it was secure. I didn’t trust it, figured I’d get my money stolen and being in college didn’t have extra money to risk.
Would have been worth 177 million give or take today. Though i would likely sold when it was worth 500k maybe less

…or, you could have $9.6B USD, and put that into stable assets, and even if you’re getting lame real returns like 1% annually, you still get $96M/yr.
Posted on 7/18/25 at 8:57 pm to stout
You could have bought it for 16K three years ago.
