WAFB

Photos shared on Facebook by the Baton Rouge Police Department show just how high the Mississippi River is.

On Monday, Mar. 18, BRPD shared four aerial photos from the Air Support Division. In the photos, the red letters that spell out Baton Rouge on the levee by the Raising Cane’s River Center were almost completely covered up.

If you guys remember 2011, they had to put Tigerdams along the top of the levee and bluff in downtown Baton Rouge. The Morganza Spillway was opened shortly after that.

The water isn't that high yet, but it is within 4-6 feet of the top of the levee in some spots.

Is BR graded like NOLA in a sense that it's a bowl?

Only a small portion... in downtown only a few blocks are lower than the levee.

That last 4-6 feet is an enormous amount of water bc of the extra width of the river at the top of the levees. It would take a lot to get there

I’ve put my finger in a dyke in BR before, for the record.

Some people would say that I’m a hero.

Just trying to do my part for mankind.

The Ohio River is falling out now, so that’s going to help a lot in the coming weeks.

Thank God it's supposed to go down a good bit before all that melted snow from up north gets here. I just hope it's enough.

My parents live in Riverbend right off River Road, and back in 2011? the neighborhood had a meeting about what to do if the levee broke. I imagine this year is rivaling that year. Any Mississippi River experts here care to shed light on how bad this could possibly get?

What did they cover in the meeting? The entire neighborhood would be gone

I am no expert but no way it would flood the surrounding area that quickly...the water would have to go all the way to Highland Road and everywhere in between. BR is not like NOLA where they are surrounded by a huge arse lake and huge arse river

Global warming melting all of the...umm...excessive snow...

Scruffy figures you aren't actually serious, but the contradiction buried within that statement is hilarious.

Went to the Bonnet Carre locks Saturday, and it was awesome. They are slowly returning the pins, but I was wondering why do this with the flooding going on in the Mid West.
There were all kinds of wildlife out there, and some Asian baws were pulling in some nice size fish.
Also great seeing those tankers across the river doing their work.
Would be fun for kids to see(I think).
