Get the frick out of here

Soft serve is fine when you just need to scratch the itch, but it's bottom rung ice cream.

Tell me you have never made ice cream without saying you've never made ice cream

Every bowl of ice cream I've ever eaten, I've stirred into soft serve with my spoon.

my mom used to make that with us as kids. It never tasted like real ice cream to me. I love that she did that with us but it turned me off forever. It's a really fun thing to do with kids though, so I bought a modern ice cream machine. My daughter loves making ice cream at home

But I agree, it's better than ice cream.

There is a place in the Summerhill neighborhood of Atlanta, Big Softie, that has the best ice cream you'll ever put in your mouth. Other than Leopold's in Savannah.

Did she want the white chocolate magic shell topping that you hand crank?

She wanted some salty nuts drizzled all over my hard serve ice cream along with a burst, leaky cherry on top and caramel on the shaft.

I view soft serve like Totino's pizza, it is perfect for what it is when that is what you want but I don't consider them to be "ice cream" or "pizza" they are just a remotely similar food.

IMO the best ice cream is really heavy with cream, slightly tempered, and with really rich flavors aka "premium" ice cream. It is usually the brand that has the highest fat content in any given freezer case.

My family must’ve sucked at making the homemade version because I never cared for it.

Been many years since I’ve had it though.

This. I like soft serve, but usually I just scoop some ice cream from a carton into a small bowl and I can stir it to whatever consistency I'm in the mood for.

I love shave ice and there are an incredible number of places that sell shave ice on the various islands but my favorite is Hee Fat General Store in Kapa'a on Kauai. It has the bonus of being less than a block away from the Pono Market which has incredible Poke bowls.

Anyone remember this stuff? My grandmother used to buy it in the 70's and early 80's when I was a kid.

It's an ice cream imitation made with vegetable oils or lard instead of butterfats, that was developed sometime during or right after WW2.

I remember not being a fan of it. Had lots of ice crystals. If I recall it wasn't bad tasting, just had a strange texture and knew it wasn't ice cream when eating it.
