Soft Saving Trend for Millennials and Gen Z?

Say Goodbye to Retirement?
I haven't heard of this term but it's something that definitely makes sense to me. I try to save a fair amount and usually have but I know since the pandemic I've been more inclined to spend a little more and save a little less.
How many retirees worked all their lives and then died during the pandemic, wasting all their prime years? Heck I see it with my dad and uncle. Worked all their lives and now they are in their 70s and just kind of hang out. They really aren't in shape to travel or do a lot of other things.
I'm more inclined to travel and do things on my bucket list now while I'm still able to. I'm just about to turn 40 so I feel like I need to do as much as I can. I've accepted that in return I'll probably never have a traditional retirement. My hope is retire from full time work at 65 but then probably still have a part time job after that. One for income and two just something to get me out of the house.
Anyone else deciding to spend more now even if it means less later for retirement?

If it were that easy, everyone would do it.

It's not saving for retirement vs. spending. It's about not buying shite from Restoration Hardware for 4x the cost you can get the same stuff from elsewhere. Stop taking cruises around the Caribbean and just fly to Europe.
But yes, I fully expect them to complain about the decline in Social Security, etc., when they wake up after sending Brywn and Spensser to private schools and paying for them to get English Lit degrees out of state. Let's not forget the $600 car payment on $50k of income.

most millennials I know don’t expect social security to exist 30 years from now. myself included

I knew that SS was out 20 years ago. I used my much younger sisters to make the point that the system needed to change, but ... Wait, things have changed? It's just another welfare program not being used as intended.

Sure I’d have more money to spend on $600 Taylor Swift tix if I lived with my parents too

This idea is just another by-product of the underlying trend called selfishness.

I think it's more that, sadly, they don't have the ability to see it any other way.

Absolutely. They didn’t grow up with the luxuries that people do now. My dad grew up in rural Arkansas without indoor plumbing. It’s hard to go from that to “flaunting” wealth overnight.

It's more related to the combination of the 2008 crash and then Covid, which have basically fricked Millennials and older Gen Z hard.
Those who were hit hard by both are, on average, going to be so negatively affected, a good retirement savings wasn't likely anyway.

Why are so many kids and women, especially women, obsessed with traveling today? Is it just to get likes on Instagram? Save your money and spend it on something useful.

Traveling is for queers. They need to spend on their damn trucks and hunting.

I have young kids. They are who I work and save for.
I focus on my health so I can enjoy my life when they are adults. If you are too feeble/unhealthy to travel or be active at 65/70, barring unfortunate life events, your priorities were wrong.

It's a shift in philosophy to value experiences over material things.

For some people, yes, I imagine.

It's more like, I can have a couple of nice vacations and a slightly older Camry or a $65k Tacoma. Which set of choices is better?

Take better care of yourself and you will be in shape to travel or do a lot of other things.
