The Fly = Destin for poor people.

A bunch of people who don't pay taxes complaining like their tax dollars pay for the land Audubon park sits on.

1) Everyone pays taxes
2) The people you are thinking about were not the ones complaining

I don't think Carrollton set out to take over The Fly to have waterfront adjacent fields, they just didn't expect the backlash.

I don't think they set out to do it but it is a spot where they don't have to purchase the property. I think if they made a run at it again with more input from the public they could reach a compromise.

While I somewhat agree here, a lot had to do with the contract stipulations.

The devil is in the details with these things. I couldn't tell from the maps they provided how much the land was going to be used, but if it was generally the footprint of where the soccer fields are now, what's the problem?

My kids don't play soccer but did play baseball and softball of a couple of years. I think that the baseball park has been a positive for the area, and I figured that the soccer complex was going to be fine. There seemed to be plenty of space left for all of the other uses. I really don't know why anyone had a problem with this.

The outspoken half smell blood in the water. They won't negotiate on the use of the park at any point.

As I said, it is a shame. The facilites could have been upgraded if both sides would have negotiated from the beginning.

They wanted one more soccerfield and then. They were building an amphitheater for Audubon.

There is a shite ton of land by the lakefront arena where the old NOSA soccer club had fields before Katrina. They should look into that area instead of something uptown where space is at a premium

The way the Carrollton boosters went about this was miserable. They got approval without much public input and then let the negative narrative be pushed by nola.com instead of controlling it themselves.

They should've created their own maps that more accurately showed the scope of the project. The maps that Nola.com put out made it look like they were taking up the entirety of the green space remaining in the park.

That being said, I was still against it because I think there are plenty enough soccer fields in city Park and in other parts of the area. The kids and families that have games in audubon park have no problems with transportation to city park.

Sounds like a good deal. Why were people opposed again?

There's a big open tract of land on the left of the entrance side (as you cross the tracks) that gets little use except for kite flyers and leashless dogs. And that's a good use, I'm just saying, it seems like there was land enough to please everyone.

Why would a uptown NORD playground want to go to the lakefront?

Dude, that park is shoulder to shoulder 3 days a week, 52 weeks a year. At least that is what the detractors have told me.

It seems like the amphitheater and other roads were what took most of the area. Not what Carrolton Boosters were after.

It seems like the Audubon board wanted certain things, and those are what pissed off the masses.

Looks like they realized the community was against it. Also some of the board members' companies had their vending contracted for the complex.

Who cares if the board members had interests in the vending contracts, the whole thing was going to be privately funded.

Because some people didn't have anything else to bitch about. it takes a really terrible kind of person to oppose a new municipal facility that serves the community, and at no cost to them.

I can assure you the crowds hanging out at the fly all day aren't paying 5 figure property tax bills.

I wasn't being racist if that's what you're implying. It's not like any of those college kids or underemployed 20-year-olds pay significant taxes either.

What I was saying is that most of the people actually footing the bill come to Audubon and run the track on the weekend or they're sitting on a beach in Destin, they're not BBQ'ing and catching a tan on some shitty strip of grass next to the Mississippi river.

I do have a great idea to build a tennis court arena similar to Wimbledon. I'd like to put it in the biddle of city park.
You're a bit late. There's a first class tennis complex smack in the middle of city park already you dumbass.

You apparently didn't catch his sarcasm there...

The only "tenant" out there right now is Brother Martin lacrosse. But after this season are moving to where the old Elysian apartment house was. It's already been purchased and bulldozed, by fall camp it should be ready.

There's not likely to be anything else out at the UNO property, there is NO drainage out there, whatsoever. Takes almost a week to drain after a fair rain.
