Looks like they realized the community was against it. Also some of the board members' companies had their vending contracted for the complex.
It seemed like a bad idea, but this was sort of a goofy angle to attack it.

What would be the difference if they were still soccer fields but nicer with better amenities/facilities?

the Tipitina's thing? That can only be an improvement as to what's currently there right? I don't know of a single person who has gone in that area since Bally's shut down

(or its a cooperative endeavor where the city supplies the land and the club supplies all the costs and manpower to run the area's recreational soccer programs).

There are a handful of fields that you currently have to rent to use, but I don't think it's really enforced (I've played multiple times on those fields without renting them or anything).
This complex would take up much much more than just those fields. Areas that are currently just green space would be converted into fields or parking.

Didn't know that because I've never paid or reserved

Paving over and destroying the fly is the stupidest idea I've ever heard.
Completely deaf and blind to what people love about New Orleans.
I do have a great idea to build a tennis court arena similar to Wimbledon. I'd like to put it in the biddle of city park. We just have to kill all the Oaks and pave over the lakes.

Why don't they just renovate the original playground location on carollton and put the soccer fields over there?
People always bitch about green space being developed and usually it is areas only handful of people use. Per square foot I would be the Fly is used more than any green space in the city. (not counting festivals)
I will say good move by Audubon and Carrollton to pull the plug on this when it became clear that a lot of the community was against this. They had approval and could have given everyone the bird and gone through with it anyway.

A New Orleans East nightclub...yeah that should be an improvement.

what property and what type of things are being developed on the lakefront?

I think Audubon was doing it as a way to have the facilities greatly updated without having to foot the bill.
The trade-off was pretty extreme, but now the facilities well stay how they are, or Audubon will have to find the money elsewhere.
All the other bullshite with the contracts poisoned the deal. I think there was a plan that would have worked, but Carrollton Boosters became greedy and the citizens that use that part of The Fly 30 days a year saw the land grab rather than the upgrades.

Announced today that a private group is leasing the old Bally's location for a sweetheart deal to build a fuel dock and nightclub.
Also, Jazzland 2.0 if you believe what they proposed.

While the upgraded facilities would have been nice, Carrollton would now be managing most of the Fly, so Audubon wouldn't have to worry about it. Most people I talked to about it were worried as time went on Carrollton would slowly restrict public use of the fields until eventually they were available by reservation only.
Still why can't Carrollton just use their property on Carrollton?

I think the property can really only hold 1-2 soccer fields. Based off Google Maps, it looks like there are 5+ fields at The Fly.

They might now. Maybe they needed to expand or all the powers that be got together and saw a way they could all be winners.
I don't think Carrollton set out to take over The Fly to have waterfront adjacent fields, they just didn't expect the backlash. They might slowly improve their own area and leave Audubon to manage the whole thing.
