The latest weekly crime statistics as of May 21, 2022 show violent crime is up compared to the start of last summer. Homicides are up 32%, rape 16% and aggravated assault 3%.

Dickens has also brought back the city’s Midnight Basketball program. Games have been held at the CT Martin Recreation Center.

The mayor has said it’s a better way to spend a night compared to what some young people have gotten involved in. He said crime prevention starts in the gym.

“On the front end, it is events like this, midnight basketball, summer youth program, things like that, deter folks from getting involved in crime to begin with,” Dickens said. “That starts right here.”

The story has been edited since this morning, they also were making all city pools open and free for all.

Why save it for the night? Have the basketball going on during the day because it's not like these people have jobs. Run their asses down until they can't walk anymore.

Elsewhere in the article they say he's creating a new Recidivism department at APD. I don't understand how a police department can address that, seems like a district attorney problem or a judge problem, letting repeat offenders walk. But I guess there will be a recidivism task force at the APD as well. Ok then.

"hey you know how everyone jokes about midnight basketball in high crime inner cities as a pathetic solution to murderous thugs? Let's go with that."

Also, the pools cost money because otherwise criminal teens will go hang out there endlessly and, as Atlanta youth tend to do, eventually start shooting at each other

These people are such idiots

City pools are free?

Are they offering a refuge for swimmers or trying to drown the others?

Atlanta can't have NOLA getting all the shine when it comes to violent crimes. They're a little late to the party, but I believe the fine people of the ATL have the ability to kick it into high gear and catch up quickly.

Having all the pools open and free is actually a sneaky-good way to lower the overall crime rate.

Smart.
